Before and after. Does she look better now?

After 6 years of owning and playing this guitar, I thought it was about time for some changes. So, I took the first step.

I pulled the 2 stock 300k volume and 100k tone, and replaced them with the SD branded 500k pots. Threw in a Russian milspec, .033uF P.I.O. cap, and copied the factory wiring. Topped it all of with a zebra Jazz in the neck and Custom in the bridge.

The results are a much needed depth to the tone, and bit less harsh high end. It sounds great!

I'm thinking the bell knobs need to replaced with speed knobs, and I'm not too sure about the pup rings. They may need a change. What do you guys think?

Looks fine. I'd go with amber speed knobs, pickup rings and an amber switch tip if she were mine though.

Style of knobs is preference (bell or speed) but I think the amber color looks good. I also vote cream rings and amber switch tip.

Gorgeous. I see black pickup rings, and possibly nickel trim rings around the pickups. The cream rings look okay, but they also look kind of huge and distracting on the bound, scaled-down, burst body. I made the same change from cream rings to black rings on my Dean ML, which has a similar look as your Explorer (burst, binding). The results were much more classy and less "goofy" looking. Black would be more low key IMO. I'd keep the bell knobs, but go to a clean gold instead of the darker "aged" gold color. Either that or black bell knobs. Speed knobs would be too bulky on that guitar IMO.

Cracking guitar! 100k tone pot, wtf?

Did these come with a 496/500 combo stock?

Re: Before and after. Does she look better now?

VERY nice! Looks great with the zebra pickups and I bet that combo sounds phenomenal. I would definitely go amber speed knobs, I'm not a fan of bell knobs. If I had the money (and if you were interested in selling) I'd make you an offer for this beauty! As it stands, jam on that gorgeous Explorer once for me!

I appreciate the input and kind words.

I'll be out and about today. Gonna make a stop at couple rock shops. I'll see what I can find.

Don't hate me, but I actually liked the way it looked with the black bobbins and cream pickup rings. I'm sure the electronics are much better now though.
