I'm trying to find something a little unconventional i really dont like les pauls and i am picky about sg's.
i would like something that is on the more lighter side (7-8 lbs) and brighter.

I am considering the following:

SG supreme
SG diablo
Eastwood Stormbird

i am also not a fan of big hollow bodies

trying to find a body that is not too big, not too small. I would also like a fast neck.

Alright, just to be clear....we're fitting a guitar to PICKUPS...not pickups to a GUITAR?

As to the Eastwood I'll only say the only instance I know of with PGs in an all basswood was Joe Satriani's Pearly which was stolen. That said it had the crazy mirror material on it that might have affected the tone. I will say that guitar sounded SMOKIN on Live in San Fransico.

The SG Supreme it will probably work well in since you'll have some LP characteristics like the bridge and the maple (though thin) The SG Diablo....hard to say with the floyd.

yes, finding a guitar that will suit these two pickups. Eastwood takes request for guitars so I was just gonna ask them to drill some hb cavities instead of p-90s. i think the sg supreme might be my favorite guitar i've ever played but i have a love hate relationship with ebony boards and i know a duncan custom would probably sound better. I'm also considering a les paul studio with a maple top.

another idea i was playing around with was..well, i like how bright the basswood is in the stormbird but i kinda wanted some mahogany in it somehow. anybody ever heard a guitar that was basswood with a mahogany top? dont really see anything online except some bass guitars, which usually means it probably isn't a good wood combo.

I personally think this is a good way to set yourself up for disappointment. You cannot with any certainty predict how a guitar will sound. Even 2 guitars made the same day side by side will sound different. If you go to the music store and acoustically demo guitars to find what you want you can do it. But you cant just say this guitar will sound like this and buy it and stuff the pickups you want it.

think i might go to guitar center and try out a bunch of les paul studios

Seems backwards to find a guitar for pickups. What's your budget? Seems you could do well with some of the Korean mahogany body/maple cap guitars. I'd stay away from ebony finger boards since the PG set is supposed to be bright already.

Re: Best 24 3/4 guitar for Sh-11 Pearly gates combo

i dont see how thats backwards. people find pickups they really like. i would like to spend under 2000. i'm only 5 8 tall and my back isnt the greatest. anything over 8 1/2 lbs is pretty uncomfortable for me.

How bright do you want? PGs are on the brighter end of PAFs (that's the "grit" instead of "smooth"). The SG Supreme is fairly bright too (ebony+maple+thin body -- I have a 59/Jazz and Brobucker in mine). I'd think something like an LP Junior/Special would be well suited. A nice slab of mahogany will keep it from sounding thin.

Side note to others: I'd guess that 90% of the people who buy staple pickups aren't thinking "you know what this guitar needs? Staples." They're thinking "I'd like to try some staple pickups. What guitar can I put them in?" Buying a guitar for pickups isn't any weirder than buying pickups for a guitar; it's just a bit more expensive.

are LP juniors just slightly smaller? i really dont know anything about those guitars.

Re: Best 24 3/4 guitar for Sh-11 Pearly gates combo

chit that might be just what i want

i would like a very bright mahogany guitar

It's basically a stripped down Les Paul without the maple cap. That means it's a bit lighter, and cheaper to make. (one Gibson version) In another way, that makes it a bit like a slightly fatter SG. If you don't like LPs, you might not want that specifically, but something in that vein would be a good bet to give you the bright PG sound without it losing all the body.

I think the bigger issue isn't the guitar or the specific model of pickups... It's the particular tone you're looking for.

You could buy a guitar and put PGs in it and then find that the tone isn't what you want.

Think of a guitar as a house. The body and neck are the foundation. The hardware (nuts, bridge, frets, etc.) are the house itself. The pickups are the front door.

The way you're going about it, it's like you're trying to build a foundation and a house around your front door. However, houses need to start with a good foundation.

pickups are the heart of the guitar. i've played for 15 years, i know what i'm doing..just looking for some advice, not stuff they teach you in beg. guitar lessons. just gotta find a "home is where the heart is" for what i want.

Well, your posts seem to show that you need to review those basics, hence my post.

There's plenty of posts on this forum which is all about pickups talking about how different guitars from the same assembly line made on the same day sound different with the same pickups.
