Dave, I think there's some differences in tone. IMHO, the matchless amps have a cool way of capturing some fender clean tones. That's not somethign i"d say about an AC30. Maybe its just that the matchless seems to have a fuller thicker bottom end to it. But they still get that jangle to them. Especially with single coils.
I prefer the matchless tone and that's the direction I took my Dierdre. I'm not saying I build a direct clone. Hell, I couldn't decipher the insides of a matchless by pictures. The Dierdre is pretty darn close when it comes to the tone. I've plaed a Dc30, just didn't ever have a chance to open one up.

The Matchless is a weird breed at best...well that is what I think....I only like their Phoenix amp

Truth is if you wwant a VOx AC-30 sound...get a Vox, the CC's are great bang for the buck and sound even better with Alnico Blues in them and if you can find and afford them the mid 90's Vox reissues that were brought over here by Korg are great amps!

DC-30 sounds all too nice...not like a good vox....

Well, my disclaimer should be: "I've never played a Vox...I'm just going by what I hear"....which is the Beatles, Birds, & Petty tunes I play.
On the Matchless side, it's The Refreshments tones I'm looking for.
The Tophat does it for me in spades. It can be smooth & clean to gritty & nasty while maintaining that jangly tone. My Thinline Tele sounds phenominal thru it & 2 alnico Blue Dogs.
But they say the truest recreation is the Valvetech Hayseed 30. All the Vox but built better thus minus the "issues".

itll make you forget there ever was a vox. tony designed the handwired ac30 ri and its a great amp, but his are considerably nicer. you want the best, this is it.
i love the matchless stuff (bad cat too) but it doesnt sound like a vox to me.
