Best digital camera to film guitar clips!?!??!

WITH FULL DISTORTION

HI Guys , how are you?!?!?!
this is just a quick question : Whats the best digital camera(doesnt matter if its a camera that takes pics AND makes movies, Or a video camera only.) to capture the sound(and obviously the video) and video of a guitar demo clip. like the ones we see on youtube? Im improving my gear to record quality demo clips of pickups, amps and stuffs like that and i would like to get a gear as good as possible.

Thank you very much in advance

ps - im unsure if its the right session to post it or would it go to the sound room off topiC?

Howdy. I think you're going to get best results by recording your audio separately and substituting it in a movie editor software.

I agree, record sound and video separately and sync them in the computer. You'll probably run into the frame drop issue (where 30fps actually equals 29.97fps or something) but for YouTube it will work.

Re: Best digital camera to film guitar clips!?!??!

ya if you mix your audio and then sync with videos that would be best

but, who cares about clips to that extreme, unless you are getting paid? that zoom q4 looks awesome for video footage of your band, which in turn would help you land gigs and stuff so it is way more valuable. Im sure it could make way better clips than most, and would be less hassle.q4 drawbacks: no remote, clipping issues

the new "gopro music" coming out seems cool too, since you can mount it to your guitar head as well as human head! http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GoProMusic/

Use a dedicated audio recorder such as a zoom or tascam and merge audio and video later.

How are you guys synching the audio to the video if they were recorded separately?

You need to line them up against a clean, sharp sound, caused by something that is visible in shot. This is what clapper boards were created for.

I use ffmpeg. Kinda brutal but gets the job done.

hey man. Thanks for the Input, YEAH, i know that and theres only one thing preventing me of doing that : A microfone to mic the amp speakers. the rest i already have. OH, i may not have a DI BOX. to record things in line.

But in the meantime, this camera is required. not only for quick clips of covers im playing, but for other things. but the demo clips will be recorded with a audio interface, microfone and stuffs like that.

Re: Best digital camera to film guitar clips!?!??!

You can also connect a real mic to your camera, but gain control is usually an issue, and they don't have symmetric XLR in :)

Re: Best digital camera to film guitar clips!?!??!

If you already have one, then check out your DSLR; many have very good video capabilities. Again though, good quality audio needs to come from elsewhere.

Re: Best digital camera to film guitar clips!?!??!

The problem with DSLR is that the large sensor causes less depth of field, that means slightly out of focus thing are more unsharp than on small sensor devices, such as typical video cameras.

It doesn't really matter whether the DSLR has autofocus that adjusts during video shooting or not. Most do not, but even if they do, AF during video with shallow depth of field looks really unprofessional.

Re: Best digital camera to film guitar clips!?!??!

I should clarify that the DSLR issues I wrote about lead to *better* picture quality as it has less image noise and because there is a reason why high quality imagining uses a shallow depth of field. It guides the viewer and it emotionally appears to be of higher value. However, the better picture quality isn't worth anything if the focus is off, or if the focus is visibly moving around for no good reason.

ETA: with that Sony camera I would have a very good look at the mic in options. A single 3.5" plug, not symmetric, is unlikely to have a high quality mic preamp behind it. Not to mention it looks like a single mic in.

Whatever you decide to do... you will need to LIGHT it.

Spend a little money on some Chinese lights off of eBay and you can buy a very cheap camera while getting good results.

It is ALL about the lighting.

assuming u are goin to light up the scene, then there is a way of using a DSLR for video while getting decent depth-of-field (depth that is in focus) that @uOpt is worried about, by goin for a bigger f-value(aperture). besides depth of field is shallow usually on longer lenses, with kit lenses on most DSLR having focal lengths of <30mm, you should be able to get a decent depth in focus.

When recording, manually set the focus so that ur movements (if any) fall in the range of depth available in ur setup.
