best digital recorder for the buck?

I'm thinking about getting myself a digital recorder to use occasionally when I feel like I'm up to speed enough on the 'ol axe to actually be record-worthy....lol. I still have all my PA equip. stuff: mics, cables, mixer, effects processor, EQ, etc. I just never got around to recording anything.

I'm interested in the "all-in-one" models like those made by Fostex - the MR16HDCD - and by Tascam - the DP-01FX/CD . I just read a few reviews on the Tascam at M-F and they weren't none too favorable. Apparently it only records up to 2 tracks at a time, and for a 16 track recorder that doesn't sound too great.

I like the idea of having the recorder/cdr combination, as I have an older computer with slow 1.0 USB ports, so I thought it'd be easier to burn it onto a master disc and then edit on my pc with software I already have. But I'm certainly up for any and all input from you guys on what you think are good pieces of equipment to consider, as well as what the standard softwares are that most of you are using to do your editing.

Thanks!

....Bob

Re: best digital recorder for the buck?

I have a Tascam DP-01 and must admit that I'm having a hard time with it. Chances are that it's me, but the manual reads like it was written by the people who designed the machine and who know the machine through and through....but they didn't anticipate certain questions from us "dumb folks."

Not being computor savvy probably isn't helping me because it's taking me a while to understand what they mean by certain things. For example you don't play back a song, they call it "Loading a song."

ZOOM MRS-8. has lots of usable feature and only costs 299. you can get the 4 track version for a cheaper price.

its hard to use but as long as your patient enough to read its manual, you'll soon realize the potential of the MRS-8

Re: best digital recorder for the buck?

I use the big Tascam but I have a DP-01 as well. I have done little with because my bass player has it these days. I thought it was very easy to ise but I think I know the Tascam thought process now so that helps.

Sound quailty is excellent.
