hi everyone,

i'm searching for the best dimarzio pickup combo for my mahogany ibanez sz320! my amp is the engl powerball + engl 4x12 cab.

my playing style can be compared to bands like sparta, deftones, thrice, chevelle, glassjaw.

i have my eyes on super distortion in the bridge and an air norton in the neck...is this a very good choice? or do i run into trouble with this (for reasons i don't know yet ;))? hopefully you guys can help! thanks.

all the mahogany is going to make the sz a very middy guitar. i would suggest a steve's special or a super distortion 2 in the bridge. the super distortion may mud up your guitar even more. as for the neck, there's too much of a choice to make. both the humbucker from hell and paf pro are good options. don't forget to check out the new paf joe also.

Teppei from Thrice uses 2 super distortions in his LP custom, which is his main axe. He also uses a LP custom with a JB in the bridge position.
You probably know his tone. Not muddy at all.
I haven't tried the Super Distortion yet but I have the JB in a RG now and I get some wicked post-hardcore tones with it.
(sorry to use this label/box, but it's merely an easy way to describe the certain type of high gain sound that the bands you named have ;) )

nice guitar, I got the blue 520 model. I was asking the same questions on here but my needs were a bit different, especially since i wnated a bunch of different styles, from u2 and coldplay, to nickelback and Pillar After a while i decided for the real chimey stuff I'm just going to go find a G&L tribute asat :)

But for really thick awesome les paul type stuff I'm going with what the guy that is setting up my guitar recommended. And since he's Baker of the supernice boutique Baker guitars, I'm going to copy the pickup setup of their "Les Paul killer" tone.

The air zone for the bridge (f-spaced) and a virtual PAF for the neck. I ordered an air norton for the neck off of ebay but will probably sell it as soon as I get it since everyone has said its just going to be too dark and muddy for my guitar. The stock pickups must be very trebbly since whenever playing it I"ve always thought its too bright and shrilly. (the bridge seems to be stratocaster type thin and the neck is muddy lacking character)

So I'm thinking that this new setup will be great. A lot of good reveiws of these pups on harmony central and you could ask dimarzio's tech support what they think if you give them your styles. They are super quick at getting back to you. Within minutes sometimes....

Check out that link to Pillar since the guitarist is playing a Baker with the exact air zone, and virtual paf setup through a dual rectifier.

Let me know what you decide.

Super distortion, or the Super 2 for the bridge. For the neck, I would say the paf pro. I didnt like the humbucker from hell at all. I thought it was kind of lifeless. I would really like to try the EJ (Eric Johnson) custom for the neck though. It looks like it would be brighter than the humbucker from hell. The air norton should work fine in the neck though.
