Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

As much as I love the JB, and Custom, the DD also gets my vote. Just an awesome pickup!

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

yeah there's no pickup that i've used that sounds more raw and aggressive than the DD.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I have always used a DD set for hard rock and metal. While the C-5/PGn set is my favorite for an all around Les Paul, the DD set is by far my favorite passive ripper in most any guitar.

The DDn/Seymourizer is the most over-looked pickup in the line IMHO. Its a must have in any situation and i like it far mor than a JB in the neck.

Just saying...

Custom - Gets down and dirty but retains great tone while doing so. In my experience it is fuller sounding than the DD

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Full Shred maintains dominion thru the mayhem.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

The JB is the best bridge pickup for metal lead playing, so its my pick every time.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

PATB-2, but I can't believe there are no votes for the Invader.

I've used all of them at some point except the Alt8, which can't be too much different than the JB8, which would rank very highly on this list.

I've used only the Custom and the JB out of all these. I liked both but the Custom a bit more. I won't vote though as one of the rest could be very well better than it.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Late '60's stock Gibson humbuckers in an SG Standard. Best "metal" sound I've ever personally come up with. Mini humbuckers (i.e. LP Deluxe) would be next on my list. P-90's work well too, as do stock '60's Strat pickups. My favorite metal tones were played before any of the pickups in the poll existed.

Can you explain what qualities does PATB2 have?
Inquiring minds wanna know,as I am torn between DD and PATB2 for my next guitar build.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

This poll is flawed.

The C8 is not on the list.

I know you have to make it yourself, but it's still a Duncan.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I've tried the JB, DD, Custom, Custom Custom, Custom 5 and Dimebucker. I've heard a ton of the Invader too. I'm partial to the Custom, although I now use a Custom 8. It's tight aggressive, clear, retains somewhat of a classic vibe but can rip your face off too. Hitting a power chord with with the Custom is just like...RAWWWRRR. Lol that's the only way I can describe it. Of the others there was always something in the rhythm or lead tone I couldn't get along with, but the Custom seems to bridge that gap for me and gives me a really good tone for both.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Ive used the distortion, invader, JB, dimebucker, and customx. For metal, the distortion gets my vote in a dark guitar. The JB gets my vote in a bright guitar. (same pup, different magnets)

I thought the invader was too bottom heavy and the dime was the other extreme.

The custom, 4,5 and 8 arent bad either. I prefer the custom2 and 4 for low/medium gain.

Lol. I have played metal with a les paul and seth lovers. It wasnt ideal, but it wasnt horrible.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Voted for the Custom, but I have mine set up with a 2x thick ceramic. It's the best for tight metal tone, it erects the mid slump of the regular Custom! It's really clear, tight, crunchy, and very prcussive with a bit of classic flavor. Favorite bridge pup yet.

I can't say best since it really depends on "what metal" and "what guitar" we are talking about.
My choices are
1) PATB2 for Basswood and Alder. Well balanced, lovely harmonics, tracks fast and has serious punch. The best sustain and bendings in the bunch.

2) PATB1 in LP. Nothing kicks as much butt as that. Heavy, punchy. It tracks well and is not muddy. Till Drop C it holds very well. Not suited for fast stuff like Modern Thrash or Progressive/Powermetal. But everything else just fine.

3) Full Shred: Best definition, very punchy and articulated with the right height/Screw adjustement. Also perfect for 1 Hum guitars. Kills in LP, or other Mahogany guitars. Lacks lows in Alder or Maple, sings in Hi-end Basswood, lacks character in cheap guitars. Nothing in Duncan Catalog can cope with Low tunings (C and lower) as good as FS does. A very special Humbucker.

These are my Favorits.
