Best EL34's?

Hey.

I had a thread going a few days ago about changing tubes in my JCM900 4501, its run with i dunno what in preamp and 5881's in Poweramp.

The preamps tube are getting changed to Sovtek 12AX7LPS as those should be real high gain, but what tubes are good foor the poweramp of this thing to get a real Rectifier like sound?

EL-34? And is it just to rebias it,?

And what tubes are best? groove tubes or EHX?

Thanks.

Re: Best EL34's?

WTF!!!

Just took the PowerAmp tubes out, there is TWO Sovtek EL34G's in it!!!

No wonder it did sound decent, but how do i take the Pre amp tubes out?

Theyre are in this like metal holster.

Re: Best EL34's?

Sounds like yours is already set for EL34's. What's the serial number of the amp? That'll tell ya if it came stock with 5881's or EL34's. It'll either be stamped on the back of the chassis or on a round sticker.

Good EL34's? I like the Svetlana's, the Winged C's, JJ Tesla's.

For the preamp tubes, twist the tube retainer (that is what is over them, and they're spring-loaded) and it'll pop off. Now you can change the tubes.

You have a 1990 model 4501 Dual Reverb. It came stock with EL34's.

Get some good EL34's in there, any of the 3 I recommended or whichever anyone else recommends. You can talk to Doug and Doug's Tubes and he'll give you some good advice too.

Those amps are really nice with EL34's. To me, those tubes are the sound of rock.

If you have to ask questions like these, it's better to not do anything inside the amp and leave that to a tech. Biassing isn't quite like replacing tubes and typing in a matching number.

On a second note, this isn't your first post on how to get a totally non-JCM900 sound out of your JCM900. Are you sure you don't want to sell it and buy something that's completely different ?

On EL34's: the C-winged Svets are my favorites, but I'm starting to like Mullard re-issues more and more. They seem to have a more balanced overall tone whereas the Svets got rather strong mids.

Re: Best EL34's?

Naahi like its sound alot, just need some different pre amp tubes.

I have been trying to twist them a bit but they wont come off, how much force can i use?

Re: Best EL34's?

You might have to push down on them some and twist counter-clockwise. Use what you need to, just don't crush them. ;)

Yay got them off.

Thanks bro.

How good are the Sovtek EL34G?

Is this amp worth more than a regular one with 5881's?

I can wait to get 12AX7LPS's in this biatch :D

Re: Best EL34's?

Never tried the Sovtek EL34G's myself so I can't say.

I wouldn't say your amp is worth more. It may be a bit more desireable since EL34's have a more pleasant sound to them than 5881's in those amps. They do to me anyways. And, there were fewer of those made with EL34's.

Re: Best EL34's?

Nice.

But thanks alot for everything, been a great help for a little new guy like me :D

Re: Best EL34's?

No problam, man. Put a good overdrive in front of the lead channel and you'll be rockin' hard with that thing. Get it retubed and biased first.

Re: Best EL34's?

I will get the Preamp tubes first and then a TS-9 Reissue, and then if that aint enough, next month, i'll probs change the Power tubes.

I cant way to play Master Of Puppets of this thing :D
