Best Fuzz

Hey fellas just thought i'd throw this one at you. I'm really interested in a vintage sounding fuzz pedal. Think the who or hendrix. I've been looking very hard at the voodoo lab fuzz pedal as i have had very good luck with my sparkle drive. Is this a good investment or should i look at another like the fuzz face or something else. I'd rather not spend more than 200$ or so. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Re: Best Fuzz

well i own a fuzz pedal that can do a lot of different sounds, but for something a little more vintage than my zvex sounds you might want to look at fulltone and there 69 and/or 70 models.

Re: Best Fuzz

The Soulbender is great for Led Zep and Cream type tones. It works great with a Tele or a Les Paul. Dark and smooth. I like the fact that Fulltone pedals are very adjustable, with the internal trimmer adding an extra range to the possibilities. Also, you can probably get a good deal for a Fulltone on Ebay.

Re: Best Fuzz

I think the Fulltone 69 pedal has become the new industry standard, although it seems like the 'newest greatest fuzz' comes out everyday with a wackier name and paintjob than the last one. On my pedalboard, I've got a T. Rex Mudhoney, which can serve as either a standard OD or fuzz. It's the most badass fuzz I've owned and sounds like Hendrix made love to Sabbath, and had WWIII for a baby! Ha Ha
Excuse me, while I kiss Chernobyl. It's a great pedal for someone who who needs a good OD, but may want to go into fuzz territory on occasion, by reaching down and hitting a tiny button.

Re: Best Fuzz

Try to get your fuzz pedal from a place that has a return policy. Fuzz's are very finicky and will sound very different from setup to setup. They will also sound different at "store" volumes vs. "cranked" volumes. So you want to make sure the pedal sounds good with YOUR RIG, not whatever the store set up for you. Most people are turned off by Fuzz's because the ones they've tried just don't sound good with their setup. Also read up on the differences between Germainum vs. Silicon transistors and which tones you've heard that you want to capture. For instance, Hendrix w/ Band of Gypsies used Silicon but with the Experience he used Germanium... 2 very different but groovy tones.
