Best guitar amp microphone for live gigs?

I am currently using a Shure SM57 to mike my guitar amp, but i find it has to much high frequency, what mikes do you recommend for a less grainy sound?

Re: Best guitar amp microphone for live gigs?

have you tried EQ'ing at the board to get a sound more to your liking? ... i am assuming you like the sound of your amp the way it is, just dont like the way the mic is reproducing it for the PA ... another idea oculd be a direct box to take a line out, then transform it to low impedance for D.I. into the board .. . some DI boxes have cab simulators that are reasonably good ... you might like em ...

but to answer you r question directly, "no, i dont know any" .. the sm 57 is pretty much the standard

good luck

Well, the SM-57 is the Industry Standard, and I've used em for years, but.....try an SM-58, and see if you like it better. Sometimes the SM-58 can be a little smoother than a 57. Also, watch your mic placement. I like the mic backed away from the speaker a bit, and a little off center of the cone. :)

I prefer the 58 to the 57.

Hmmm ... I don't think that the '57 has ever been called overly bright by anyone!

However, if it's only a problem when you play live, simply turn the treble down a notch or so on your amp when you play live.

Re: Best guitar amp microphone for live gigs?

do you point the mic directly at the speaker or do you set it off axis??? Where is your mic placed on your speaker, in the center or out near an edge???

I find if I droop my SM57 over my amp (micing it off axis) and place the mic out near the edge of the speaker (about 1 to 2 inches in from the edge) I get a great sound through the board. I haven't experienced a grainy or overly bright sound using a 57 but I'm not saying your not having this problem - but before you drop more money on a mic try different mic placements to see if you can't improve the sound.

right on the money riff raff. I have done this soooooooo many time live and recorded and mic placement is the key. more center to cone is very gainey and grainey, to left or right of cone away from center gets more basey as you move outward but too far out and you get all clip and no gain. try this, move the mic left or right of speaker cone center (and back)about 6 inches but point it almost at center. than it picks up clip from out side and gain from cone. experiment, you'll get it. good luck :fingersx: :fingersx: :fingersx:

I've done this with an AKG414, but never a '57. I'm gonna try it at practice tonight!

Re: Best guitar amp microphone for live gigs?

yeah, mic position is crucial .. i've put the tip of the mic right against the grille at the 9:00 position and aimed it down the angle of the cone ... i've also done it a few inched off the grille pointing perpendicular to the grille about midway from the center of the cone to the 9:00 position on the edge

experimentation is the key

good luck

Re: Best guitar amp microphone for live gigs?

DON'T MIC THE CENTER OF THE SPEAKER.

Sorry about that.

The center of the speaker has something called a beam. The beam is this horible nastyness that just sounds bad. To see what I mean, listen you your speaker with your ear directly inline with the center of the cone. Now move your ear off-axis towards the outside edge. Sounds much better there, doesn't it?

That's why you sometimes see artists with tape and stuff on the cab grille over the center of the cone, it eliminates the beam if they use the cabs for monitors. Trust me, on slant cabls that beam can really mess you up and make you think your tones gone to sh*t when it actually sounds fine.

You use the '58 for guitar? Interesting. I have the '58 and the '57, but figured the '58 was solely a vocal mic. So how does it sound compared to the '57?

Re: Best guitar amp microphone for live gigs?

Thanks for the advice i will try different mike placements and let you know how I get along
