Hey guys!
I'm in the market for a NEW hi gain amp for under $1000. I would also like a hi hi gain amp with a nice clean tone. Let me know what you guys reccommend!

I don't even play with high gain and I'd still like to own one of these just for those rare times when I might:

Came in to post the Peavey 5150/6505 series. Was beat to it. $1000 will get you a used Peavey 5150 full stack. Just because EVH uses it doesn't mean it doesn't have enough gain on tap. Plenty of black and death metal bands use it.

Re: Best Hi Gain Amps for Under $1000

Peavy XXX also has a good clean tone. You'd need to buy a used one for around $500, or the new XXX II for $1200

Peavey: XXX, 3120, 5150/6505
Blackstar HT-100 (also HT-60H, 40H or 20H, depending on your volume/headroom needs)
Laney Ironheart 60H, GH50L

Cool. Thanks guys. I was looking at the EVH 5150III and the Peavey 6505. I was leaning toward the EVH more cause I read that the clean is better than the Peavey.

Re: Best Hi Gain Amps for Under $1000

Plus the independent EQ on the clean/crunch channel of the EVH makes the clean channel a lot more controllable than on the 6505 which has a shared EQ between the clean/crunch and lead.

Yea that's a plus on the EVH! Id get the 100 watt of the EVH, but that's a bit extensive when when I mainly use it in the bedroom or band practice.... And a but more $$$

Re: Best Hi Gain Amps for Under $1000

There's always the Carvin V3, though I recently got rid of mine to get the EVH 5150 III 50 watt, and IMO is the best under $1,000 amp out there

Might as well throw the Peavey JSX in the "to try" list too. Similar to the XXX, with a built-in noise gate and pretty nice clean tones.

My Orange Jim Root Terror was $680 after shipping and tax with a coupon from Guitar Center, that thing smokes with a TS-9 in front. I'd call it almost high gain without the boost, maybe, but its a different kind of tone altogether.

that being said, i just bought a NOS 2008 Mesa Boogie 3ch Dual Rectifier for $1050 from Mesa Hollywood. I know its slightly over $1,000 but on the other hand, its a Mesa Dual Recto, if youre into that kind of amp

Re: Best Hi Gain Amps for Under $1000

I know you menitoned you were looking for a new amp but here's my two cents just in case you change your mind. I bought my Rivera Knucklehead II last year for $650 and it was in excellent conditions... basically new... If you look around hard enough you might found one. Although Rivera has their own unique voice and they are a pain to dial in for some, they are similar in gain to a mix between a modded JCM800and an Soldano SLO, I does a good "Recto" sound if pushed hard and the cleans are out of this world "even though is a 120W RMS High gainer". Plus is USA made and very tough built.

Amp shown is not mine, but from imageshack:

Another one I almost pull the trigger on recently was the Hughes and Kettner Triamp MKI... they are selling used around the $700-$1000 and they are beasts that virtually will do whatever you want them to do. The only down side it's that you will need some serious cahs for a re-tubing, as they have 9 preamp and 4 power amp tubes.
