Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

Re: Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

All it says is EMG in gold letters. They are not active because there is no 9 volt in the guitar.

Ever had the pickguard off of it?

The alternative 8 sounds a little hollow though. I will look at some more vids of it.

Hollow?! It has plenty of mids and forward focus in my lp. It's like a super distortion with 3d glasses on. Don't go by clips. Most of them suck big time.

In the video that I was watching it seemed to lack some of the low ends that the invader had. The Alternative 8 did sound the nastiest though, in a good way. It had an edge to it that made it stand out big time from all of the other pickups that this guy was trying.

Re: Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

that vid is really not representative for that pickup. it really isn't. the invader is much more powerful, much fatter, hotter, more low end than the alt 8, but the alt8 has enough low end for most styles.

Dude, in the video you're talking about, the Alt 8 is wired in parallel (most probably) so it sounds pretty odd and thin. It has nothing to do with it's real tone.

Go to tonefinder.com and search for some clips of the Alternative 8. They'll give you a better idea of how it sounds.

Damn! Chuck Norris has spoken and like any smart person I have listened. :thanks: I did not even know tonefinder.com existed.

That's an active 85. Should have plenty of crunch. Put a fresh battery in.

The alternative 8 does sound completely different at tonefinder.com

I see no battery. I pulled some of the screws from the pickguard and peeked underneath. I don't see a 9volt anywhere unless it is real close to the pick up itself. I will take some pics and post them.

Re: Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

I think an alt 8 tb-15 and two fat single coils should work great.

Re: Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

There was in fact a battery tucked under some foam under the pickguard. I replaced it and it sounds a little better, but it still lacks the range on the wah that the hot rails has. I get to jam with the band on Tuesday. I will see if there is any difference.

Re: Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

Just a quick update. I got a chance to really crank it up and put it to the test. It does sound much better, more fuller and lots of good crunch. I will give it some time and see how it feels. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Re: Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

you may want to try the 18v mod, that was a great mod when i was using the normal 81 and the EMG 60 as well...

Re: Best humbucker that has some good low end and serious crunch

the 18v mod makes it a lot louder and fuzzier. i liked it at first when i did it then just went back to 9v.

I think I will pass on the 18v mod. It has enough power. I am still thinking about trying another pickup though. I will try this one for a while longer and see how it feels.
