Best Humbucker to Run Straight to Output Jack

Hi y'all - happy St. Patrick's day!

I have in my possession a Squier FSR HS Tele (the cherry/pink colored one from a few years ago).

My goal is to make this my "rock" Tele and have only a single humbucker. I plan on blocking off the control plate/controls, but wanted to know the best humbucker to run without a volume/tone pot in the circuit. This will be my classic rock and pop-punk Tele, so I originally thought of a Super Distortion or Invader. I'm hoping that if it's beefy enough, it won't be ice-picky at all while in this configuration.

What are your thoughts? I'm getting all of my dirt from stomp boxes into a Fender Blues Junior III and Ibanez Tube Screamer Head.

My experiments have been that anything with Alnico II mags sound best running straight thru or with 1mb pots. AL5s get a little harsh but IIs sound great straight thru.

So something along the lines of a Custom Custom would work better in this application?

I appreciate the suggestion, but unfortunately the JB always sounds too edgy and spiky to me...and that's with a volume/tone pot in the circuit.

If it were me, I'd put unique pickup like Phat Cat or (white) P-Rails in that sparklecaster. Of course you still need selector with P-Rails.

Something from which you'd never, ever want to pull treble. JB/500T/Super D (all three sound very similar to me), or something along those lines would be my thoughts. They are some of the most non-trebly pickups I've ever played; they could use to be wired straight to the jack IMO.

TV ****ing Jones.

As a Junior/Esquire maniac, it is my opinion that you will need control pots - if only to vary the degree of overdrive saturation.

Re: Best Humbucker to Run Straight to Output Jack

The JB is a popular choice for pop-punk and classic rock in ash/alder. I'm assuming your Tele is something like that. Or maybe basswood or agathis. But I wouldn't wire a JB straight to the output jack. It kind of needs the load from your pots to bleed off some of the high end.

I've heard some success stories of people transplanting Gibson 498Ts into Fender-style guitars. That might be worth a shot.

The Custom series is always a safe bet, and responds to magnet swaps pretty well. If you got a Custom and a few magnets, you could experiment until you find one you like. I'm surprised no one's mention the C8 yet.

Thanks guys! So far the ones that appeal most to me:

Phat Cat - would this be a treble monster wired straight to the jack?
Super Distortion
Custom Custom

I'll also check out that 498T too!
