Re: best magnet for humbucker opinions

Slash uses A2 magnets. A5s are popular as well. Then you have rough-cast and unoriented.

I'd start with an A2 and then go to an A5.

After hearing a few with A4's in them in the last few weeks, I'd say give one a shot. Nice even eq response.

Re: best magnet for humbucker opinions

The 2 most common magnets for classic rock are A5 and A2. It's impossible to answer your question because it depends on the particular pup. I play classic to hard rock and in some pups I prefer A2 mags. In some pups I prefer A5. Sometimes UOA5 or A4, and sometimes A8. I almost never like ceramic magnets because of the brittle sounding highs.

The only mod that some (most) OEM pups get from me is I take out the mag and carefully deposit the pup in the round file. They are not worth the time or effort to do anything else to them except use them for practice modding.

I don't know, I recently put an A4 into the stock Powersound neck pickup in my friend's Ibby Gio. It made it at least usable.

Re: best magnet for humbucker opinions

There is no 'best humbucker magnet.' It depends on the PU, wood, pots, amp, tubes, speakers, effects, and what kind of music you're playing.

What does your PU sound like now? Bright, warm, full, thin, tight, loose, compressed, open, weak, overpowering? How do you want it to sound? You have to know where you are now before you blindly take off in a certain direction.

Re: best magnet for humbucker opinions

In that pickup, keep the ceramic. Nothing is going to help it. No A2or A5 will change that it's bottom of the barrel quality
