Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

Hey bros, my uncle is getting back into the electric - after so many years of flamenco. He sold his Les Paul and '78 American Strat years ago when he got married and now he's missing it.

He's planning on the 50th Anniversary Stratocaster already.

Now the amp...

He's done with Fender for now, "too clean" in his words. He want's some of that classic Marshall crunch! So now, the only question...what model? He says money isn't too much of any issue, so just shout out anything that comes to mind. He's a classic blues player. Thanks boys!

Re: Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

Either the Bluesbreaker combo 2x12 amp or the JTM 45 amp...After that in order of the amount of gain he needs would be the early non-master volume amps(Model 1987 or the 100 watt 1959 heads)....Next up is the master volume heads which includes the JCM 800 series....

Another great modern Marshall amp for lots of styles would be the DSL series...Others will chime in I'm sure...

Not much to add, I agree with the above, although I prefer Fender for blues myself. Hard to beat a Super Reverb IMO.

Re: Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

Fender does amazing blues....

I love the bassman halfstacks for blues. They're a bit 'meaner' sounding than most normal fenders when you plug into the bass channel and crank it up. And the heads go for fairly cheap. And there are tons of mods you can do to them, since they're PTP wiring.

But if he's set on a marshall, the bluesbreaker or JTM-45, as said earlier, would prolly be best for classic blues.

Best Marshall for Classic Blues? That's easy!

1959 Fender Bassman with four 10's! LOL!

SRV used a JCM 800...as did Buddy Guy the last time I saw him. Maybe he's playing a Cyber Twin or something else now...

I used to love playing blues through my '82 Marshall JCM 800 2x12 50 watt combo amp.

When I think of Marshall and Blues I think of British Blues: John Mayall, Peter Green, Eric Clapton, etc. It's a more distorted and more modern tone than what I think of as classic 50's or 60's American blues, which would be almost 100% Fender amps.

Re: Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

how about a plexi? that gets my vote. the 1982 jcm800 is a close second, then the jmv45

Re: Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

Gotta agree with Stratdeluxer AND Lew. The Bluesbreaker combo, or the Bassman would be my 1st choices. ....:)

Re: Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

JTM45 - JCM 800 - the 800 will get you much more gain and plenty of Gary Moore type crunch, I like the smoothness of the JTM 45 but I've yet to hear a stock reissue that I thought sounded really good, maybe retubed and biased a little hotter they sound good.

He's had a Twin Reverb in the past, so he knows that thats not the sound he wants. Thanks anyways!

Re: Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

Very cool guys, thanks for all the recommendations...

JTM45, JCM 800, Bluesbreaker, Bassman, even a Plexi! Very nice. Keep 'em comin'!

Re: Best Marshall for Classic Blues?

JTM 45 or equivalent. He may want to wait until the new Marshall PTP's come out in a little while - look really interesting...
