which in your opinion is the best pickup for soloing and pinch harmonics that would fit the bill in a basswood body/rosewood fingerboard guitar, the D-sonic gets really muddy and it sounds like **** at high gain volumes, any suggestions for a better pickup ? (would help if you got some decisive sound samples :)

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

zakk would be the king of pinch and he uses an emg 81.

so an 81 maybe?

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

PATB-1 has a good solo voice and gets great harmonics. I really like the wah-type effect of some Dimarzios for soloing, it really makes the solo stand out and sound unique. My experience with the wah effect comes mainly from my neck Virtual PAF, which is supposed to be one of the more subtle wah effects, but I really dig it. It comes out even more when you turn the tone down, which is pretty cool.

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Really man, when I think pinch I think Zakk but, do you need it in a passive pickup?

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

When I had a JB I found it great for all harmonics and leads. I hated it clean and for rhythm (except for 80's hairmetal type stuff), but great soaring leads and harmonics that just popped.

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Solos with the JB seem to sing more, but the Custom will blow your mind for pinches. It's incredible.

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

I need them in passive form, yes
i have the blackout on my other guitar, AWESOME pickup.
i think i might go for the distortion, from sound samples it was the only pickup i really liked.
will it fit in a basswood body ?

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

I have the distortion in a Basswood Cort, dunno man, I like it for heavy distorted tones but in MY guitar it's kinda bland for anything else, I had to resort to heavy EQ tweaking from the amp to be satisfied but now I like it just fine ;)

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Evolution. Screaming leads and the most powerful harmonics i've found so far in a passive pup

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

JB, Custom and Distortion all can fetch great harmonics. But I like JB best for solos.

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Maybe it's down more to your playing style? Pinch harmonics can be had even at low gain on apparently cheap pups. I can get pinch harmonics no problem at all on my Epi Black Beauty, which has stock Epi pups.
My SL3 also is very easy to get pinch harmonics on the higher strings, with the JB OR Hot Rails and even on the clean channel.

Of course, if you're looking for Cannibal Corpse type harmonics, on the low E string, you'll most likely need an EMG or Blackout. I find it impossible to get pinch harmonics on my two lower strings, on any guitar. But maybe that's just my playing style? :)

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Don't even worry about pickups for pinch harmonics. Hell, you can do them on an acoustic, I generally do them on single coils (not for long mwahaha)

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

It's dependant on your tone, but both the bridge p/ups i've had in my basswood RG (Screamin' Demon & now the Custom-5) are great for PH on the thin strings 80's style.

You'll need thick bass strings to replicate Zakk's wide PH though. They don't sound too good on thin bass strings. (I use .008's on my RG).

The DiMarzio Evolution is supposedly good too.

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Duncan Distortion will get you in the neighbourhood, if not there.

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Maybe it's just me. I don't find it to be a pickup at all. The majority of the time it's just about practicing pinch harmonics. I learned how to play guitar on a crappy ass acoustic with probably 3/4" action. Till this day I can do pinch harmonics on an acoustic without even using a pick. I'm not trying to come across as some pompous ass or anything...it's just my opinion man. Now mind you, when we're talkin gettin em with distortion...I think it's more about the amp and playin style than the pickup....but that's just me man. I hope I didn't come across as some whatever kinda guy man.

Re: best pickup for soloing and pinch ?

Pinch harmonics are easy to get on every guitar .But getting agressive ,complex and mighty pinch harmonics depend on
a) The amp
b) The Pick
c) The strings
d) Pick-up!

All of the things above are really important for the harmonics...
PATB-1 tends to have the nicest and most agressive but round Harmonics i've heard..

The BKP Miracle Man has awesome harmonics ,but it's a tad soulles when you compare it with the PATB's...

Duncan Distortion is a Harmonic animal ,but it's a tad sharp and harsh...

Maybe PATB-2 ,or PATB-1 with a Ceramic magnet can bring you to your tone...

PATB Harmonics are somehow original..They tend to be more complex ,pretendable and easier to sustain!
