Re: Best sc tone when split?
From what I gather, YJM Fury might be on the right track, it's supposed to nicely balance warm & stratty tones. But it doesn't offer a hot tone by itself, it just responds well to amp drive.
Or you might consider something like an SSL-6t tapped Custom, to get normal & high output tones out of one pickup. An SSL-3t or SSL-4t might be other good options, depending on what sort of tone you like. But none of those are humbucking, which might be important for high output tones.
If it needs to be truly humbucking, choices get rougher, as there aren't tapped models of the vertical stacks (the ones that do the best single coil tones without hum). Stack Plus series offers non-tapped versions of most of Seymour Duncan's SSL models, and even the STK-S7 Hot Vintage Stack Plus, which doesn't have an exact match in the non-humbucking lineup. The STK-S7 is a lightly overwound single, slightly hotter than an SSL-2, but not as midrangy as a Custom or Hot model.
Out of the side by side humbuckers, I've heard good things about several models, but not much in terms of sounding truly stratlike split.
