whats the best fender amp to get if i were gonna use it overdriven most of the time, but i still want good cleans. I always thought of the fender bassman, but i dont like how your paying 1500$ and no reverb.

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

Your using pedals to overdrive it? Get a HRD used for cheap! Put a V-30 or other British style speaker in it for better OD.:)

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

The Bassman is loud and clean, and doesn't break up till it's very loud.

The amps you're looking for, based on the fact that you want gain, is all the amps from the Pro Tube Series, like the Supersonic, Twin, Concert, and Pro.
Also, the Pro Sonic from the 90's.

I just tried the Supersonic out for an hour, and it's really a versatile amp for a gigging musician who wants authentic Fender cleans, but also a heavier gain channel. I like the amp.

I like traditional Fenders too, but if you're looking for versatility, the Pro Tube Series amps are the ones you should be looking at.

thansk man, what do you think of the vibrolux or deluxe reverb? what do you think of buying old vintage bassman heads though? they seem really, really cheap too! like 600-800$

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

I like Tweeds for dirt. A cranked Bassman or Twin is a thing of beauty. :burnout:

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

hmmm describe the tone of overdriven tweeds. how much do they cost? I've beeen considering the fender bassman 100 head

There is a lot to say about overdriven tweed fenders...more info that just one thread can contain...

FWIW, a Bassman 100 is NOT the Fender for great OD tone...

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

The tweeds have a great, thick overdrive, but they aren't master volume amps, so you have to crank them and can't switch to a clean channel. One reason why smaller tweed fenders like the deluxe and champ are sought after is their ability to overdrive at lower volumes.

I've heard hot rod deluxes with vintage 30s, and they sound pretty good. Add a nice od in front and you've got a pretty flexible working clean/od rig.

I own a custom vibrolux reverb, and it sounds great, but again, it's a one channel, 'crank it' kind of amp. I don't mind, as I set it for one sound and boost that with a pedal, but it's not as flexible as a modern channel switcher.

I haven't tried the supersonic yet, but I've heard it's a very cool, flexible amp.

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

The good news about tweeds is they like pedals, so you could get a Bassman and drive it with whatever gain pedal suits you. Many a great guitarist before you has done this.

If you want overdrive from the amp, the Supersonic is without question Fender's best high gain. Very versatile as GJ said, and it has a more well-defined and even gain than anything else they make. The Hot Rod amps are very good, but they tend to get bass-heavy as you crank them up.

And who cares about reverb? They have pedals for that too! :)

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

A Twin, if you can get that loud... lol

I love those amps! It's like a blank canvas!

The Super Reverb is a tad bright, but its good

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

Blonde bassmans are great amps, but as with any pre-80s fender amp, you're going to have to crank it to get the overdrive. Which is fine if you play largish venues and record in proper studios. So, if doing that is practical for what you do, cool. If not, look at the hot rods, the pro tube series (except the vibrolux) and perhaps the prosonic s/h. They'll be able to hold decent cleans at giggable levels as well as overdrive.

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

Dunno about vintage pricing on blonde bassmans. They'll be significantly cheaper than a real 59 tweed bassman and more expensive than a tweed bassman reissue.

I'm sure someone is up to play with the technical differences, but in general, tweeds sound thicker and run lower wattages than their blonde or brownface equivalents.

If you've got the money and want the best new tweed fender you can get, don't get a fender. get a Victoria. How much are you looking to spend, and how are you going to use it?

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

mmm
maybe something around 1200$ and less.

I'm mainly going to overdrive it a little and i usually play country, blues and psychedelic rock sometimes.

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

If you're looking for gain, Fenders may not be the right amps for you....a Marshall, Laney, Peavey, Crate, or Carvin is going to suit your needs better.
I'd suggest you go to a large music store and plug into all the amps they have, and you'll see what your sound is.

When you're talking Fenders with guys here, you're talking to people that play country, blues, roots rock, rockabilly, and pop. What amps are your favorite bands playing? That's what you should be looking at.

Based on everything you say, I'd point you at British amps or channel switchers, or if it's Fender, the Pro Tube Series. I can't tell you how many guys on this forum have taken the advise about Tweeds and Blackfaces, bought one, then realized there's no gain like they thought there'd be.

And their next post is VERY predictable. What tubes should I use for gain....and what speakers have the best low end. LOL Neither....you should have bought an amp made for gain.

well, i do want good country-like cleans. just good distortion too! lol

welll ive heard fender has a unique overdriven sound, unlike marshall or anything.

Re: Best sounding Fender amp overdriven?

For country, blues and psych-rock, then perhaps a non-channel switcher fender would be fine. Deluxe reverb reissues are great country and blues amps that overdrive at reasonable gigging volumes. Also the Custom Vibrolux reverb is pretty good for that, a bit louder.

-I'd recommend either of those if you want a nice mild overdrive tone as your main sound at club gig volumes.

-If you need super clean at gigging volume, then i'd look at the hot rods and the channel switchers in the pro tube range.

...and Gj is right. Get your arse into a decent sized store and try stuff out. Preferably a store that has a private room where you can crank the amps to the volume you're going to use them at. That's the quickest way to find out what you like.
