Best stoner fuzz?

JB_From_Hell

Jomo's Nimions
What's the best way to go for tones in the vein of Fu Manchu, Pentagram, Queens of the Stone Age, etc...?

BTW, I'm looking for a pedal, in case the title isn't specific enough :)

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

There's zillions of fuzz pedals out there, and many have that 60's bumblebee sound.
The T. Rex Mudhoney was one of those pedals that I tried out, and had to have it. It's got 2 modes with a mini switch.....a regular OD mode, and in the fuzz mode it sounds like fat river of mud, but still has definition. When used with a gainy amp, it sounds like a sludgy wall of doom. Really a cool pedal.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

"fat river of mud with definition" is a pretty good description of what I'm looking for. Thanks :D

Damn, $200? Maybe there's a used one around somewhere.

Does $39 for a Fuzz Face sound too good to pass up?

Every once in awhile I think of selling it, but then I use it and change my mind.
Fuzz's are funny because they sound so different depending on how much amp gain you use. The cleaner the amp is set, the buzzier they get. At least with the Mudhoney, it's like having 2 pedals. You could use it all night as an OD, then if you have a song where you want that thick stoner type sound, just reach down and push in a button.

The Fulltone 69's are always popping up used for about $130, and they're well worth the money.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

the fuzz amp model on my POD does a good QOTSA sound (a lot of tones from rated R).... and im pretty sure its modelling a fuzz face. i would say that or a big muff pi could get you some stoner rock fuzz. i always thought that the QOTSA got their fuzzy crunch from a fuzz pedal, but it turns out their tone comes from their ampeg guitar amps.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

you can prolly get a similar tone just by rolling the tone back on your guitar & using the neck pickup

that's how i get stoner rock tones, anyways

**** around with it a bit, see if you can get anything you're happy with

if you can't get a good tone try out a big muff. They're real finnicky pedals though so make sure you can spend some time with it

Unfortunately, I'm using a Kramer with neither a neck pickup nor a tone knob :)

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

well that could be your problem

every stoner rock player i've known has either rolled back the tone knob on the bridge or used the neck pickup

so, stick in a no-load tone pot. That way if it doesn't work for you, well, you don't have to take it back out & deal with a hole in your guitar

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

I think the guitar's in for a major overhaul, uncluding a tone control & neck bucker. I also need a more "square" sounding distortion device.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

The natural gain from most less modern sounding amps works....most modern voiced amps are too big and tight IMO. I use either of my amps with the gain up around 7 and my neck pup's (59) volume rolled off some. Volume is a big part of the stoner sound IMO, and you don't always need alot of gain when you have alot of volume.

Other than that, ANY fuzz works. Not all will make you sound like Kyuss or Fu Manchu, but any will work to one degree or another. Half the fun is experimenting and finding the one with the sound that you want.

FWIW.....for those times that I don't use amp gain, I use a Boss FZ-2. So does Electric Wizard.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

I think the best stoner fuzz is that little bit of beard you miss when you are shaving because you just can't focus on the bathroom mirror thru the haze & watery eyeballs...

Or a Big Muff.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

Overall, the Big Muff puts you toward the front of the line, since its sustainer (compressor) knob you takes the to the front of the line with what is a more smooth and creamy 1970's tone. It can be noisy when not playing because the compressor increases of the background "shhhhhhhhhhhhhh".

If you peel back the layers of QOTSA, you hear Cream (I only have "Songs for the Deaf"). Finding out what Clapton used may be easier to find out.

As far as FUZZ, I like the soundtrack that was done on the cheap for Roger Corman's B-movie biker flick "The Wild Angels":

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0061189/

The lead tone from this 1966 movie is that diode-y square wave tone that sounds like two cats fighting...just add wah-wah. You can believe that the choices at the time were few. Perhaps the entire world's supply of "fuzz boxes" could have fit inside a Volkwagen microbus in 1966?

As far coarse square wave type fuzz goes, Iggy Pop's The Stooges' first album would certainly be in the top running...like on the the solos of the songs "Not Right" and "Ann". I would like to find out what that box was.

If someone would really like to go retro, just use those fragile, nasty, cheap coiled cords people used in the '70's. They roll off some highs out of sheer design. Joe Walsh said he liked them for this reason.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

IMO, Dallas Arbitor Fuzz (orig geranium) will definately get you some thick defined fuzz, especially if you downtune.

EDIT: As much as most people don't like the BOSS MT-2, I think it works well if the battery is "sagged". If you have a Voodoo Power pedal (there may be other power supplies out there that do this) there the option for connecting a pedal and controlling the 'sag'. This emulates a dying battery. Honestly, the best I've ever heard an MT-2.

That is a great idea, Bob!

Joe (gearjoneser) Did You Get A New Amp?

I was wondering the same. If it's the one in the avatar, I want a review!!

I'll vote for the T.Rex based off of what I've heard about it.

Re: Best stoner fuzz?

No, I don't own the purple Germino Masonette combo in my avatar.
I'd love to own it, but it's not in the cards. I still like the beautiful pic though. All my old avatar pics were the hippest thing I've seen on Ebay that week. I think I may start doing that again. It's prettier than Tommy Chong or Benny Hinn.

Clapton used the neck pickup to get that "Woman" tone in addition to whatever pedals he might have had.
