Best sub-$500(AUD) valve/tube head?

I'm looking at upgrading my amp very shortly and I was wondering what was out there for around $500(aud), I'm thinking maybe a 2nd hand Blackstar HT-5 or something similar. $500 is just for the head, not the cab. Any suggestions?

I've got a Blackstar HT-5R and I love it! That said, I'm not sure if it the best sub $500 AUD amp in the whole world but its a good choice.... Are you planning on buying your new amp from the states and having it shipped out or are you buying in county?

New or secondhand? You can get a fair few options secondhand, some Laney stuff goes for below 500 (even the Cubs new are around 500) same with the Orange Tiny Terror head secondhand (this in in Australia). Depends I guess on how much tight high gain you need. Also stuff from Jet City is in that pricerange

I looked at the tiny terror but I want something that actually has separate controls on the EQ (1 for bass, 1 for mids, 1 for treble), not just 1 eq knob. And it doesn't matter where it's from, Preferably Aus but if it's from the states the shipping would need to be included in the $500.

Honestly, if you're just doing the djents, then you might wanna follow the other guys and get a modeler. Most tube heads in the $500 range are not gonna be multichannel amps, and from my limited experience with djent, i know it's a pretty common thing to go from a super glassy clean sound to a huge chuggy distortion. Pedals alone won't get you there, so you have to have an amp that can do that. Line 6 Pod HD's can be had pretty cheap on the used market and they do sound quite nice.

However, if you're dead set on a tube head, look into the Peavey 6505 micro heads. They retail new for $499 USD, but check the used prices and you can probably do a lot better. 20w doesn't sound like a lot, but plug it in and crank it, and you'll blow your ears out. If that doesn't do it for you, then I stand by my previous statement.

I bought n new Blackstar HT5-RH head with reverb, two channels, clean and overdrive. I have it hooked up to my awesome Avatar vintage style two twelve cab. It looks like an old Marshall cab all black with gold piping trim. It looks like a Bluesbreaker amp with the five inch panel over the black speaker grill cloth boxed in with gold piping. It's loaded with twin super sensitive (104dB) Eminence Swamp Thang twelve inch 150 watt each speakers. It sounds incredible and I won't be blowing up those strong speakers.

It is my favorite of several incredible amps I own. I obviously suggest you follow your initial feeling and get one without undue delay.

Good luck. What guitar do you have?

Or the Blackstar HT Studio 20. EL34'S.

This might be my next amp head.

I'm going to put an Eminence Swamp Thang in a one twelve closed back cab I have as well, 8 ohms so I can use it with my other amps and ones that only use 8 ohm cabs. 150 watts. Should handle my 100 watt Marshall head too.

The Blackstar tube amps are very awesome. I'd like to try a ID60TVP too.

If you're not fixated on tubes...get one of these (...the Hotone ..not the Peavey lol) & save yourself $400 :D

I played one through a 2x12 the other day & was floored by how big/awesome it sounded....def getting one for myself.. :bigthumb:

I'll assume you live in Australia, or at least a country that uses 220/240 Volts AC. If so, remember that most American amps will be set up to run from 110 Vac and may not have the capability to be switched to 240 Vac operation. That would mean extra expense of getting a step-down transformer or having the internal power transformer replaced.

So importing an amp from elsewhere is not likely to be a financially practical way to go. Buy an amp from whichever country you're living in.

I have a few guitars most of them pretty ****ty but oh well. I have a Jackson JS22-7 with an SD distortion 7 in the bridge and a warman 7 string humbucker in the neck, a dark green Aria STG-004 with 2 Warman vintage hot single coils and an EMG HZ humbucker in the bridge, a custom made strat style that I built myself and upgraded almost everything with 3 Warman invader style single coils, an Ashton AR282 with a custom made pickguard and just 1 wilkinson humbucker in the bridge and 1 volume knob. I also have an OLP MM3 with a Wilkinson humbucker in it and a ****ty samick J bass. I also have 2 djent sticks (if you don't know what it is, look on youtube) 1 is a 26" scale with some ****ty humbuckers in it, the other is a 39" scale!!! with 2 Jackson 7 string humbuckers in it. I'm also currently in the middle of building a custom tele, it has a contoured body like a strat (deep belly cut and arm rest) and I'm planning on putting a quilt maple veneer on it as well as a Blackout in the bridge and a passsive P90 in the neck and locking tuners. I have also payed half of a new Ibanez RG421MOL which i'm planning on upgrading the bridge pup to a Lace deathbucker and the bridge to an EMG HZ or something that has a nice acdc style rock tone.

Also for everyone else, thanks for all your help. I ended up buying a Joyo Mjolnir, so many good reviews and people saying it was HT-5 killer even though it's chinese made. It should be coming tomorrow or the day after. I'll let everyone know what I think once I've played it a bit.

I did have a look at them and I still might get the bass one as I currently don't have a bass amp at all (I mainly play guitar)
