Best time of day to pratice?

Does anyone else find that having a full time job, a house and a marriage takes up energy that could be spent on music? If so, has anyone got any tips on good practice times or mental warm-ups to get your head in a state to get some good practicing done? :onder:

Re: Best time of day to pratice?

I usually work from 7:00am to 5:30-6:30pm Monday thru Friday, so I'm out of the house from 6:30 in the morning until 6-7 at night. I typically don't play much in the evenings on work nights, I do most of it over the weekends.

I go into my man cave after dinner and work on music... around 7:30 or 8:00 for me.

I don't get the time to do it every day either, bummer.

Usually starting between 1-3 and practicing to about 3-5.

As for mental warmups, part of playing is in your head. I sit there in class and think about playing scales, in two octaves, and possibly ascending in 3rds and 5ths. Even thinking about doing it properly is slowly training your mind, and you'll find that even thinking about running through practicing will make you fingers more nimble because the mental portion is already there, you already know where your fingers should go and at what pace.

That technique is one of the ones I used to finally break the 16th notes at 120 barrier.

By the time I get home from work and make dinner it's 7 or 8 PM, so if I pick up a guitar that's about when I start. Sometimes I won't play at all, other times I'll end up playing for 5-6 hours into the early morning. On the weekends it ends up being whenever. I have far from a regimented practice schedule, but I've never been the type to sit down and practice for the sake of practicing, either.

I've read the opposite -- that your brain is more alert in the morning than it is at night. That said, I prefer practicing in the evening, after dinner but before the kids are in bed.

The article was about retention and language as I recall, not about being alert.

Whatever time of day gives you the most uninterrupted privacy is the best time. Obviously that's going to be different for different people.

Re: Best time of day to pratice?

It was about when you have the energy rather than retention - I do very little practice during the week after work because I don't always feel like it. Rather than beat myself up about it I wanted to check it out with other forum members to see if they get the same thing. I'm in recovery from fatigue symptoms caused by a spinal problem and I want to check if it's this that's the issue or am I back in the ballpark of feeling the same as everyone else because that's just the way life is?

Hey Mike, how do you get on with the Custom 5 / Jazz combination? I'm considering putting the same outfit in my Les Paul. What range of tones do you get?

Anytime, anywhere. I take a Strat with me in my car and during my hour lunch break I practice or learn a new song. Get a battery powered amp and get to work whever you can spare a few minutes.

my mind seems to feel free to practice and learn just after i have my first coffee in the morning. when i was a starter i just couldn't learn anything in the evening.
