Best velcro source? Tips?

Looks like Im gonna have to make the switch to velcro on my board. Dont know why I thought zip ties would work.. Just didnt want to get sticky on the pedals and all. Was playing my Wah the other day and the zip tie popped. Besides, they tend to flop around too.. Whats a good source for inexpensive but quality velcro? Home D?

I figure installation will be pretty straightforward, but any tips? Thanks

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

Yeah the industrial strength stuff from Home Depot is great. Tip: put the hook side on the pedal that way they will stick to the carpet when not on the board. Tip 2: with some pedals you can flip the bottom plate over to keep a vintage look later.

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

I bought some from the local craft store for a few bucks.

As far as the hooks, as much as I hated them sticking to the carpet when I would rearrange the board, most boards that you will buy have the loops on the board rather than on the pedals. So if you have any intention of selling pedals ever, then I'd go with the hooks on the bottom of the pedals.

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

Lowes. I bought that Velcro industrial strength stuff and 15ft was $31 even. Also, another good idea would be to use a staple gun to give the Velcro some extra strength where it won't try to pull off the board when you pull a pedal off.

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

Skip velcro and go for 3M Dual Lock. It's more expensive, but you won't have the issue I ran into with industrial velcro where it held the pedal better than it held itself to the board. I went to remove a pedal (no longer remember which one) and instead of the velcro separating as intended, both sides stayed together but pulled off the board so I had a sticky mess to clean up.

That is where an industrial staple gun would come in use...Just shoot some 9/16" staples into the board (if its wood), that way it will hold the velcro to the board....If its a metal board,.......I have no options lol.

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

I use industrial strength purchased at WalMart...probably the same thing as from Lowe's or Home Depot. I place the hook side on the pedal. I like the idea of it sticking to carpet if removed. For commercial metal pedal boards, clean the metal surface with acetone to enhance the bond. For wooden boards (mine are painted flat black). I've had good success just applying direct, although the staple idea appears to be a good one. I do changeout pedals from my boards, but not frequently.

Securb,
LOL!!!!!

GuitarSquirrell,

Yes it's wood and thanks for the tip!! Im sure with the wood being somewhat rough, the velcro wont stick to it nearly as well as it will on the pedals. And/OR may pull the paint off the wood, so def will tack it down.. I have a staple gun.

Dystrust, Thanks for the info! Couldnt you just put more down over the sticky? Or were you switching methods?

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

Don't be afraid of Velcro. The adhesive can be messy and tenacious, but judicious use of Goo Gone followed by a Windex chaser will vanquish it from most surfaces. To get things started, a heat gun on its low setting will usually get the adhesive to release enough that you can peel the strips off.

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

Also posted in LPB's velcro thread, but applies here too:

As far as the hook and loop debate, (which part on the pedals) I see the good in both, just not sure which Id do. Hooks on the pedals for possible use on carpet is good, but also, then would get carpet and other stuff stuck in it.. I bought a used pedal once that had so much crud and crumbs stuck up in it, I could have pulled off the velcro, sent it to an impovershed country and feed 10-20 starving children. It was gross.

Re: Best velcro source? Tips?

Well, you don't want that nastiness showing on the board, do you? :eek13:

Two tips:
-use masking tape on the bottom of the pedal, then Velcro. It'll peel off easily, but still stick to the board.
-use 4 little squares of Velcro on the corners, and run the screw through them. (BoogieBill's tip)

I'm assuming the crumbs and crud were in the Velcro because it was used on carpet. I can't imagine the face of the board laying on the carpet, collecting crumbs and crud.

I do like the corner tip, though.

Anyone tried magnets? Might be troublesome for tape delays, but....
