best volume?

what are usually the best settings for volume on a tube head or amp (specifically a 5150), for recording and performing? Also, are attenuators worth getting?

Re: best volume?

Actually the best would be to have the amp cranked to the level where it's sweet point is... of course this isn't always possible, so you have to compromise....
Attenuators can be handy to turn your amp down a bit, but they still won't turn your 100W Fullstack into a bedroom device... at least not without massice tone sucking

Joking: 6

Seriously, though, on a 5150, I found it sounded best at about 3 or higher (I gigged with it on 4) , but still sounded good even at 2.

Re: best volume?

I usually like setting my master about noon and my preamp to taste (usually a medium high gain tone).

Re: best volume?

My 50watter sounds best around 5-7. Above that it over distorts and below that its just too quiet.

The general rule of thumb on an amp is dimed. Hold your ears kids!

Re: best volume?

dss, i found that my 5150 was perfect at those volumes aswell...its good to know im recording at a good level.

i was just wondering if i wasnt getting the best tone since people always say to crank everything...i guess it really depends

Re: best volume?

Really, you just need it loud enough to get some speaker interaction and the tubes working a bit, but the 5150 is a ****ing loud amp!

Re: best volume?

on the peavey forums some dude said to crank the master all the way up and adjust the channel volumes to your liking.
should i do this?

On a 5150.. no. there is no master like you're speaking of.

With something like a JSX or XXX, though, I'd try to keep everything at noon (level wise). I wouldn't put the preamp volume past noon at all if at all possible.

Re: best volume?

hmm..

well i just went and cranked my master up to 3 oclock and had my channel volume on about 9 oclock and it sounded pretty killer

Re: best volume?

My peavey goes up to 12, it stays at 11 for a jam. I personaly find 70-95% volume is about the best for most amps I try.

Re: best volume?

I have used my 5150 with my last band a fair bit.... Inside in small bars i found 3 was overkill! I played a few outdoor gigs and had to crank the Rythym to 4 and the Solo to 5 as i was not mic'd thru the PA.... the amp was more alive but no where i've played inside would i get away with a 5150 half stack on or near halfway! But when you get a chance to open a 5150 up it is an experience!!!!!
