Best wah pedal around?

Is the cry baby from Dunlop still the reference in the wah world?

I am really starting to dig in playing with a wah pedal and my Boss FW-3 doesn't produce a nice sound + the run is very short. But hey, Got it second hand for £20 and wasn't using it much so far.

I don't care much for the new wah / distrotion / modelling stuff. Just want a plain and raw wah pedal with true bypass.

What do yoy say?

Re: Best wah pedal around?

The crybaby doesn't have true bypass, but the higher $ models have agood filter which also gives you basically the same... so they are nice.
I had the standard Crybaby modded for true bypass, but it died on me recently :( It was a cool one.
Ok so where were we.... ah yes... bsaically with wahs there are many different opinions.
Try the top Crybaby models, some Morleys and a Fulltone Clyde and you should get what you want.

Re: Best wah pedal around?

is the true bypass mod easy to do on an original crybaby? (I guess Pierre wouldn't mind showing me... Are you around man?) Because I have to say that the price looked appealing to me?

Re: Best wah pedal around?

Weeping Demon...hands down. It does EVERYTHING and is infinitely tweakable.

Judge yourself. I found it to be easy because it's not really more than modding your guitar internals...
BUT you have to be really careful with the PCB because well... it likes to disintegrate when not handled with love... read: the soldering spots (the printed ones) tear off and you have to make your own connections then, which is quite a hassle.

Re: Best wah pedal around?

the fasel inductor model sounds like the bees knees and sounds loads better than the GCB-95. I sold my old crybaby and, after some research online and in store, I'll be picking that Fasel Inductor one up probably.

Re: Best wah pedal around?

This is where I upset some people but IMO the typical Dunlop wah is one of the worst sounding wah's out there...there are lots of good wahs to be had...budda, fulltone, teese come to mind, that new BYOC wah looks like it might be a good one or your could shell out big cheese for a vintage Vox or a Supaquack...

I agree, I don't like the standard Crybaby at all either.

I've owned a DB-01 Crybaby from Hell that was very tweakable and sounded great, but I used it too little. Now, I have an older Crybaby 535Q that offers similar tweakability (except for the lack of a frequency-trimpot), and sounds very similar.

Then there's those Teese RMC's, and does anyone here know the MST Silver Machine wah? Its design is very original, instead of a potmeter or photocell it uses a mixing desk slider!

I don't know about "infinitely," but maybe I just haven't found it yet.

I like it, make no mistake about it. But the Wah models in my POD xt Live have more range (open-closed) in the pedal. I was tinkering a bit the other night, and I maxed the switch under the pedal, and got closer, but it still seems a bit more restricted.

Now, TONE-wise, and as far as options, it's hard to beat that pedal for the price.

Re: Best wah pedal around?

I've had a fulltone clyde deluxe for a few years now, and I've never played a wah that I've liked more. Can't say that I care too much for the standard dunlop variety.

:laugh2: :laugh2: Yes, But price point and tweakablity still make them attractive. When I bought my GCB-95 (Back in the 80') That's pretty much all that was available.(maybe Morley was out then to?) Not much of a vintage market yet,And no Boo-teeks market to speak of back then. I did the silly torres mod to it and couldn't be happier with it's sound.:) I've since modded it and tweaked it to my liking. If money is not a issue?...Than I totally agree. The Dunlop makes for a good paper weight then.:laugh2:

Re: Best wah pedal around?

Fulltone, Teese, Budda. The Budda was designed by Budda Amplification, and uses good components. I think Dunlop manufactures them, so the price is reasonable...around $150. It's also true bypass. I used that for years, and now the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe puts a big smile on my face. The 3 different frequency settings, Shaft for funk riffs, Jimi for traditional Vox, and Whacked for a low string riffage like Cantrell. The Clyde Deluxe isn't cheap, but it's all I've ever wanted out of a wah.

Re: Best wah pedal around?

i say crybaby is the way to go. the cheaper <100 dollar ones arnt that great, but they with mods, they become insane. they are amazingly easy to mod. true-bypass, than slap one of these in, and you got one hell of a wah!! ohh and maybe switch out the pot.

Re: Best wah pedal around?

Last I heard, Budda wah's are produced by Budda, not Dunlop. I was lucky enough to be able to play through the very first prototype of the Budda Wah as my previous amp tech, Jeff Bober, designed and built that wah. I still remember him raving about that "true bypass" and a more friendly filter range. Jeff went on to become a co-founder of Budda and his wah's have become legendary. I own one and it's the most expressive wah I've ever used. And to top it off, Jeff is still accessible and extremely helpful! The man's a tonal wizard!

I agree about the Budda. It's one of the best out there. Some have accused it of being too bright, but that's not true. On mine, I just adjusted the treadle to dial out the highest highs, and it sounded fine after that. A lot of people forget that there's more travel on the pot......and you can tune it to your taste.

My friend and ex bandmate is one of the most in-demand Hammond B-3 players in Los Angeles, and I turned him onto the idea of using wah's in a custom made FX loop on his Hammond organ. You haven't heard nothin till you've heard a 1958 Hammond B-3 with Leslie with a Budda Bud Wah in the Loop! It's coolest thing I've ever heard!

The Line 6 Wah's are almost aways better than anything you can plug in the chain. Line 6 does a fantastic job of tailoring the Wah's for each model of amp.

I noticed this back when I had my Flextone; they really took their time and asked "what is a player going to want to hear from a Wah?" and then developed the Wah for each model around that.

The Demon works great for my Deluxe Reverb Reissue, Velocette and the Blues Junior. But for each amp it does need different settings to cater to that specific amp.

I own 3 Wahs. A Vintage Thomas Organ Company Crybaby (circa 1967), a Vox 847 (which at this time does not work) and a Vox Clyde McCoy. The Vox Clyde McCoy may be what you want. Its true bypass it has its own power supply as well. It has a good overall vintage tone and the sweep is very comfortable. My Vintage Wah was modified by StratDeluxer97 a while ago and it is the best Wah I have now. I will probably be buying a Fullertone Clyde Deluxe next year. From the opinions of many guys on this forum it is the best vintage type of Wah out there. Pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Re: Best wah pedal around?

The Crybaby Classic has true bypass. it also has a fasel inductor. i love mine but i have bad experience with the switch though. i broke it after a couple minutes of playing so i exchanged it and broke it again. so i just replaced it with a fulltone 3PDT switch(only used 6 terminals) and also changed the pot with Hot Potz II sealed pot which improved the sound.
