best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

Re: best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

If you are using it for both I would suggest Morley. They do make a bass wah but most of their wahs are designed for guitar, bass and keys. They have an incredibly wide frequency range.

Re: best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

I like the dunlop bass wah. 2 controls for flexibility and auto return and stops when you take off your foot with no messy switch to mess up turning on and off, very similar to the Morelys.

Re: best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

From my perspective, a bass wah has a lower center frequency. When I tried to use a guitar wah (stock Cry Baby), it would kill the low end.

I'd look for something that had adjustable tone center and range, like the Morleys mentioned above, or perhaps the Dunlop 535Q-B.

Several good pedal wah suggestions already. Similarly selectable for guitar and bass, the Rocktron Black Cat Moan.

For touch/auto wah, the BOSS AW-3 Dynamic Filter.

Re: best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

I've been using the 535Q but it cuts too much the low frequencies. It sounds good when you are playing bass alone but as soon the band start playing the bass desppear.
I'm gonna check out the Morley. Any specific model?

I would give the classic Morley a try. The Duel Bass also might be an option. I recently switched from a vintage Morley to the Morley Mini and found the tone and range to be very similar. Here is a review I wrote up on the Mini

The dunlop cryababy bass wah is a 535q but specifically designed to retain low frequencies.

Re: best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

It is great for bass but the OP needs something that will work for bass and guitar.

Tried it on guitar and it worked really well. In fact the first sound sample of the pedal on their website is the bass whammy being used with a strat and plexi.

If I didn't think it worked well for both then I wouldn't have mentioned it given the title of the thread.

Yeah, the bass versions of FX usually just have components with wider frequency responses than their cheaper "guitar" counterparts.

This sometimes has no effect, sometimes makes the effect better for guitars and then sometimes the midrange changes enough to make guitar players stay away from it.

Really just a matter of personal taste IMHO. The Boss Bass Limiter is just the LM-2 repackaged and remarketed... might have changed a few parts to deepen the bass extension but it's essentially the same pedal.

I've always liked playing jazz guitar out of bass amps... In fact the best jazz guitar amps double as bass amps... there aren't any distinctions in the Polytone line... hell some bass players like the JC120 Jazz Chorus.

Re: best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

Just get a vintage Morley Power Wah and be done with it.

That was my first thought but the size, ac power and those little bulbs are a pain in the ass. The Morley mini was a perfect replacement for my vintage silver beast.

CAE-404 Wah from Dunlop. It shares similarities to the 535q but has better components and a wider range.

Also try the BBE "The Wah" less frills but tunable.

Re: best wah pedal for guitar and bass?

Definitely look at Morley. You can get away with a Dunlop if you need to (which is what I did) but if I could have gone Morley I would have for bass.
