I know sandpaper right? lol
But is that all there is to it or are there certain things i should know about? Like do i start with a heavy grit then work down to a fine,ect...? BTW this is a lightly satin finished headstock i`m going to be working with, not a thick glossy finish. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Would I be correct to assume that we are talking about a waterslide decal above the sealing coat(s) on the wood but below the clear top coat?

Re: Best way to remove a logo from headstock?

It depends greatly on what kind of neck we are talking about and the finished used.

Re: Best way to remove a logo from headstock?

I usually grab a hacksaw and go to town with it, i.e., cut off the headstock.

In all seriousness though, it depends on the type of neck. If it's an inlaid Gibson logo, then obviously, hell no. If it's a Fender waterslide you also have to take into account if the neck is tinted or not, and even if it isn't there's the fact that if the neck is relatively old you'll have some natural yellowing.

Besides the type of neck, it depends on whether you just want to take the logo off or whether you want to make it look like there never was a logo on it.

Squier neck with factory logo. Satin finish. Doesn't have to be perfect as I plan on refinishing it.

For Fender-style guitars, snad and refinish, or just paint over it for the vintage matching-headstock look.

For Gibson-style guitars, just use black electrical tape. I saw one like that on a TV show the other day. LOL

On my Squier I took all the hardware off the headstock, sanded first with 400 to remove the logo and the finish, then 1200 and 2000 to make it real smooth, and then re-sprayed a glossy finish,
which I later sanded lightly with 2000 and later polished, to make it smooth.
Looks and feels terrific.

The thing is that the finish usually has a darker color than the bare wood,
so you're probably better taking the whole finish on from the entire headstock (used to say fretboard here, oops) and starting from there.
It's really easy. And I'm not much of a DIY guy.

Take the finish off the fretboard???

That would mean removing and replacing the frets, no?

On the ash/maple Fender American Standard Telecaster that I used to own, the finish on the neck was doing a fine job of removing itself! The combination of over-zealous finishing and the angle at which the neck was hung up to dry caused a build up of varnish along one edge. That slightly thicker portion of varnish, next to the fret ends, was prone to flaking off.

Re: Best way to remove a logo from headstock?

Just gonna do the headstock. If it ends up being a different shade then the rest of the fretboard/neck so be it. I actually think that kinda stuff looks pretty cool anyway. One time i had a Maple neck Carvin with a Mahogany headstock overlay!

Now that i think of it. I might just stain the headstock a darker shade anyway!! *lol*

Block it with 120 paper until you start to blow through the logo, then switch to 220.
