Better overdrive pedal?

Which is a "better" overall overdrive pedal:

Way Huge - Green Rhino
Fulltone - Plimsoul

I'm using a Fender Twin Reverb. I use Fender Strats for the most part. I play mostly blues and classic rock.

Re: Better overdrive pedal?

Of those two, I would try the Plimsoul for your needs, it has hard clipping and soft clipping so you could get "harder" sounds from it if you need to. Alot more options since all of your drive will be coming from a pedal.

Re: Better overdrive pedal?

I agree with Devestone on the Plimsoul, but prefer the Boiling Point over both. It costs more, but well worth it imho. The looking stopped when I bought mine and it replaced a King of Tone, BB Preamp and a Cusack Screamer Fuzz on my board.

Re: Better overdrive pedal?

For Classic Rock/Blues, with a strat into a Twin reverb...I'd go with neither of those...I haven't tried the Green Rhino, considering it hasn't been released yet...But its basically a modded Tube screamer, with alot more options (the new one at least). Which isn't gonna sound too great, for anything other than light clipping, into a clean amp. Now, the way huge Pork Loin on the other hand, would cover classic rock/blues tones, into a clean amp very nicely. Great, great stand alone Over Drive.

Beyond that, I'd say check out the Zvex Box of Rock (or distortron). Supposed to sound like a Cranked Plexi, in a box. And the three times I've had a chance to try one out, it definitely delivers. The best sounding Marshall in a box I've ever tried. The B'o'R and the Distortron are basically the same thing, cept the BoR has a built in Boost, and the Distortron has a few more tonal options for the distortion. Theres a few guys here who absolutely love theirs, an I'm sure they'll chime in.

Re: Better overdrive pedal?

I use a Twin reverb and right now I have a Twin Tube Classic That I really love. But i just got a Duhram Zia Drive im waiting for. I play a 62 ri strat with a hotrails in the bridge and I also play a 72 Thinline tele love both the guitars with my Twin Tube Classic.

Re: Better overdrive pedal?

Since the GR is a reissue thats not even out yet not to mention that the reissue is different from the original, which I am all but positive NOBODY on this forum owns one of I'd say there is no way to really answer this question yet...

Also worth mentioning there is no "better"...just different flavors of good...

FWIW, the GR (both the original and the reissue) is based on a TS-808 and the Plim Soul is not you're really comparing apples and oranges...

Re: Better overdrive pedal?

i like the ttc and think that would be a good base for tones but its more like an amp than a pedal. a twin is a great platform for it though.

I agree the Twin is a very good platform for pedals but my TTC really sounds nice on it and the 2 channels and eq is awesome. I really think its an underrated pedal.

Re: Better overdrive pedal?

to clarify what i said...

the twin is a great platform to use the ttc to get a variety of dirt sounds. i think the ttc works best into a big clean amp. it doesnt "feel" like a pedal though, much more like an extension of the amp, so lots of people put a ts or something in front of it to get more of the typical pedal squishyness that people expect.

You've got me researching the Rockbox Boiling Point. Pretty killer pedal, but the $389 price tag! :banghead: At least it's good though!

They've been coming up for around $290-300 on TGP every once in a while. Still high, no doubt. It's the first od that made me go "Wow" the first time that I heard it and then I played one and was sold.
