Big muff trick

I recently got a big muff (nyc reissue) at a pawn shop and I love the tone but i think it gets a little boring after a while. so i tried putting it in different places in my rig and discovered that i could play through it straight into the effects return of my 5150. it has to be one of my favorite tones ever!:biglaugh:

anyone else ever tried that, or see any reason that it could hurt my amp?

Re: Big muff trick

You will not hurt the amp. By running into the effects return, you are bypassing the 5150's preamp, and going straight to the power section. Notice how the volume, gain, and eq knobs don't affect anything now?

Re: Big muff trick

I think eric meyer runs a big muff into a cab simulator or something, which essentially does the same thing really. Its using the big muff as a preamp.

Re: Big muff trick

I do that with a lot of my distortion/gain pedals. Using a dirt box or even a compressor or an EQ as a preamp is one of my favorite methods of setting up my guitar rig.
