Billy Gibbons tone - strat sized pickup

Greetings All,

I heard from a credible source years ago that using a neck position Hot Rail in the bridge of a strat will give a tone similar to Billy Gibbons.

Has anyone tried this? Thoughts?

I'd say lil 59 would get you very close.

I hope it sounds more like a PG than the other SC-sized HB's do to their big brothers. It's pretty hard to get anything close to a full-size HB tone-wise by overwinding those tiny coils; the easy part is to give it the name.

Gibbons does own more than one electric guitar, people. He frequently plays Fender guitars. There is even a BG pickup for Telecaster/Esquire. I suspect that, when he records, the ol' basket also employs a fair dollop of P-90.

Old-school drive or distortion played with redneck soul will get you there. Yes, single coils can get you there, too.

I have a PG for Tele and it is crazy how much it really sounds like a ZZ recording.

You mean BG1400?

If so, I have one, but I love my Hamel STD-B Broadcaster lead so much that I am not using that BG1400... I guess I need another tele.

Nope, it's actually a Lil PG side by side coil. Killer pickup.

I have the Lil PG for strat, and it's pretty awesome, but I can get close with a bunch of other pickups too. The full sized PG, the Demon, the S Deco, a Power 'tron; it's mostly down to the way you play it.
