Black Knight?

I've been seeing a strange pickup called a Black Knight that looks like 1/2 of an Invader. What is it? Looks cool....

Re: Black Knight?

pretty sure its a fake duncan made in photoshop and used as a members avatar.

kind of a cool joke.

Re: Black Knight?

you could prob get a tele sized p-90 with adjustable poles like at harmonicdesign.net and replace the poles

Re: Black Knight?

Well, a half of an Invader would be two small ceramic mags and a wind at around 8k.

A Hot Rails has two coils at 8k connected in series, along with a small ceramic mag.

I agree it looks cool, but I honestly do believe that the HR would be the hotter of the two.

Re: Black Knight?

Yeah it is a photoshop I did. I used to have the other fake duncan as my avatar the Evil Duckbucker. I did talk to MJ at the custom shop once and she said they could do something like this one using an overwound Quarter Pounder as a base and then replacing the poles. I still hope I can get Zhang to make something like this just for the heck of it.

My dislike of most tele bridge pickups is the ice picky twang which is what they are known for, and my dislike normally for the Invader since the huge poles makes it bassy/muddy, the Invader poles would ideally warm up the normally ice picky bridge. If I can get Zhang to use his Paul Bunyan wind or Super Paul Bunyan wind with these poles I think it would make a nice high output p-90ish tone.

Re: Black Knight?

I just made a Strat pu with some Invader-style poles (but even bigger). I had to use ceramic bar mags. It sounded pretty good, plenty wide and beefy but still twangy, but it just doesn't have the sweetness and 3D complexity of Alnico. Too opaque for my tastes.

I replaced the ceramic bar on the neck side with a 3/8" wide Alnico 2 bar (believe it or not, it will fit in a Strat single-coil cavity), and that improved it significantly, but still not quite up to snuff. Can't put a 3/8" on the other side, not as much room there, so I can't try it all-Alnico.

So am looking at getting some 1/4" wide Alnico bars made but I'm not sure they'd be strong enough. A Tele version might be wide enough to use slightly wider Alnico's though.

couldnt you get some smaller sized A8s to put in there?

Re: Black Knight?

Zhang, can you get those mini mags like SD has on the single coil sized humbuckers? I would think 2 of those would work on either side of the ends of the invader poles or if short poles were used then a normall humbucker bar magnet would work. I'd be willing to try an A8 as well. If you can do something like my avatar with your Bunyan winds with a strong enough magnet let me know via PM.

Re: Black Knight?

Those are ceramics in the SD Li'l series. It would be really hard getting A8 in that size too. There's a bit of a tooling cost to get those narrower Alnico's done, and the vendor who would do that for me just doesn't do A8 (or A4 for that matter) in any way, shape or form. So I'll have to wait a bit to experiment with the other narrow Alnico's I can get.

Beyond that I don't want to babble too much about my own stuff here so I don't get kicked out.
