Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

I've been playing my bassman repro head through my Mesa cabinet that has a single Black Shadow in it. When using the same head with my Mojotone bassman cab I felt I got much more clarity and hi end out of the amp. With this cabinet, it seems a lot more dark and thick sounding.

Any body have same experience with these speakers? Just wondering.

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

Mesa labelled several different speakers as "Black Shadows", so are we talking the EVM, Celestion C-90, or the Eminence MS-12?

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

These are more recent versions but not completely sure which maker. It's in a closed back cab which is probably another factor compared with the Mojotone which is partially open.

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

The 12l's are "dark/expressive";

( you'll note the vintage mega/ultra rare 50's V Joe B. acquired fairly recently).

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

the C90s definitely are dark, IME.. Like a 12-80 but even darker.

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

I have a C90 Black Shadow in a Mesa combo, or I should say, I had. I switched it out for a Fane AXA12 Alnico Blue. 100 watts with the alnico tone. It turned the DC-5 from a thud to a ringing and singing tone machine.

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

I'll bet that sounds killer. I had a DC5 and i thought the black shadow sounded a bit too big, modern and cold. A sweeter speaker would make that amp superb.

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

I wouldn't say the Celestion C90's are dark, personally. They may not have got the upper mid bite of V30's, but they're got a whole lot more going on higher up. Same as the EVM 12L's. JMO.

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

I used to have a Black Shadow C90 in a homemade 1x12" cab and I would describe it as "stiff". Everything is generally quite even with that speaker but didn't give anything at the same time. Boring!

Re: Black Shadow Speakers - Dark?

Yeah I'd say stiff as well maybe a better description than dark. It is certainly a Celestion model. I got a better look at it today. I can see how it would go great with high gain and when I run it with my Tremoverb I think it sounds pretty good but with the other head it's just not really doing it for me.
