Black winter 59 opinions

I would like to order a Blackwinter bridge but am considering a 59 neck. Will there be a volume difference or clarity issue? or should I just do the BW set?

Re: Black winter 59 opinions

What are you hoping to achieve with the '59?

Output-wise, the SH-6n and the Black Winter neck models are both good matches to the Black Winter bridge, of course, but you can make a more vintage pickup work.

If you want a little less output in the neck position, but lots of clarity, check out the Jazz model

Re: Black winter 59 opinions

I have installed neck 59's with JB's and Duncan Distortion's and had no problem with volume.

But......., since I have already installed 2 sets of BW, let me tell you that I love the BW neck tone, it's silky, powerfull and clear. I like it more than the BW bridge, so IMO the best match for a BW is another BW.

Re: Black winter 59 opinions

I like and trust the 59, I like slow and thick leads to compliment my rythms. But it sounds like the BW can do the job. I've never heard them aside from vids on other peoples gear. Austin music stores are not too metal friendly, not like Chicago was. I had a hard time even finding a Jackson loaded with JB jazz or 59 out here to test out. I really want to try the set and am trying to talk myself into it. Thanks

Do it!

Then, in the rare chance you decide you want something different, we'll better know where to steer you...

Re: Black winter 59 opinions

I like beefy mids and smooth crunch with clarity. I like stretched goofy chords and sustained palm mutes and tight punchy single notes with clarity. Did I mention the desire for clarity? I just want what every one else wants but don't want to have to put the time and hard work into it to truly make it sound the way it's supposed to sound because gear makes the player. Or is that just a rumor?

Re: Black winter 59 opinions

I've got a couple SD volume pots, does any one know if 500k would sound to shrill with the BW or should I go 250? I like warm distortion and stray from highs. I know the 250 will do that but will it suck good sound out of the BW?

I like the SH-6n, especially with an A4.

Clear but very present.

Re: Black winter 59 opinions

You would want to use 500k pots for the BW or any other humbucker (at least to start- you can vary from there).

Re: Black winter 59 opinions

I have a Black Winter set, and like said above, the BW neck is the best match for the BW bridge. And you definitely won't be lacking in clarity, BWs are very clear and articulate, and are very well balanced overall. They truly give you what your guitar really is, IMHO. The only drawback being is if your guitar has any weird quirks in it's natural tone, because it will come through in spades. But in the right guitar, it they're magic.

So far my favorite two guitars I've had them in are my Les Paul and my bolt on Jackson King V with an alder body and maple neck with a rosewood board. I've also ran them with 250k pots and a .022uf cap and 500k pots and .047uf cap(s), and honestly, they seemed just as at home with the 250k setup as they did with the 500k. Probably because of the extended top end. It isn't piercing or shrill by any means, they just have a crispness that many other pickups don't have.
