Re: Black Winter Rules!..

I didn't know they made one for LP...I called them for 1 few years ago and it didn't exist...will check into it.

Black Winter is very high output chunky deep.
Use a thin hard red pick with a very pointy tip and a set of Cobalt strings 11-48...Drop C# tuning at the moment.

Re: Black Winter Rules!..

Cobalt is like novelty rubbers... Get yourself some allnickel DRs (true blue/ddt) in 11-50 or 11-54 and hear the diff. Dont fear the greater gauge, either, nickel has higher tension but feels SOFTER on your fingers

Dean Markley HD strings 52-11 set LTHB. They give a brighter and more focused tone.

Dude, no offense, but sometimes you come off as a pr!ck.

If someone likes a certain type of strings, who TF cares?!

Re: Black Winter Rules!..

The pickups look great and I hear a lot of great things about them. I can't wait until I get a set for myself.

Re: Black Winter Rules!..

Good job with the ABR-1 bridge Holmes!!!

May all your winters be black!!! You are going to love them in all situations. We've been talking about them in the Black Winters Owners thread for months and I'm glad you're aboard.

As far as strings go, I used DRs for over 20 years and I tried some Elixers about two months ago and I'm never looking back.

Re: Black Winter Rules!..

Hey guys, I'm interested in the black winter pickups but I play in drop a and g. I have a 27" scale baritone guitar with a mahogany body and 3 piece maple neck. I use fairly thick strings as well so even at that tuning the strings aren't floppy at all. Anyway, I was wondering if the black winter would be suitable for my style. I use a high gain tube amp but I also like a good clean sound as well. I tried the ahb-2 but I couldn't get a good clean tone out of it ( I admittedly seen it coming). I don't know much about passive pickups but it seems that's the direction I'm headed. There is not enough room in the body cavity for a battery and I'm not taking a router to my new guitar. I had to remove the other two pickups and 5 way switch to make it work for the ahb-2. Thanks guys.

The Black Winters were designed for the heavy sounds of the Norwegian Black Metal Scene. I'm not too familiar with the work of those bands, but I think they tune down pretty low. If not then the video of Keth Merrow playing them definitely shows that they can do low tunings. There's a 7 string video, too. So, try em out. If you don't like them then send em back within 21 days and SD will give you a different set.

Most of those black metal bands play in e standard. I think Keith's video was in ç#. I think I'm gonna give them a try. Thanks for the info though.

I play in C standard (with my black winter equipped guitar), and I recently tried the same guitar in drop A#. Worked great for me. I've been playing a sort of technical blackened death metal style lately. The Black Winter bridge works great for my uses.

Awesome, thanks for the input. how's the cleans on it? Do you have to roll off the volume control to avoid distorting the amp. Oh and how's the clarity? Would you compare it to EMG or more of a Duncan blackout?

Would like to try some. Wow you've got those pickups really close to the strings! Back em off some and get some presence back!

I have an epi goth explorer with the BW and a gibson explorer with emg JH set. The sound is comparable, the emg has a slightly "harder" sound in the mids to my ears, and that's it. I do prefer the emg's, but the BW is my favourite passive alternative for high gain madness.

The clarity is better than a Blackout or an EMG 81 in my opinion. Cleans are surprisingly decent. It has very woody sounding cleans. The cleans get even better if you wire it to a push pull pot for split.
