Black Winters are like which DiMarzios?

Re: Black Winters are like which DiMarzios?

Maybe the closest would be d'act-set, but it's not like I've tried every model, not by a long-shot.
Of the two I personally would go with the BW-set, but I'm a big fan of the whole Duncan Distortion family/series.
Only the x2n has really did it for me from Dimarzio (at the bridge), but I've yet to try many of the newer models (like the last 10yrs).
Many of neck pups from both brands would be fine for me, I'm just not too neck-picky as long as it's not total mud with my setup.

I imagined DA's or maybe the DAX but X2N stands out as probably the closest match but then again it's hard to say since I personally haven't had much time with the BW set. I do own the DAX bridge and X2N. Love em. X2N offers more treble than the DAX which I tend to prefer especially in lower tunings.

How do you find the X2N for you?

Re: Black Winters are like which DiMarzios?

I like the x2n especially well in basswood, in alder or ash I like the DAX better because it has more depth and lower-mids.
In most of the maple/mahogany guitars I've owned I end up liking the Duncans or even EMGs better.
Obviously these are generalizations and IMOs. lol

Of course :)

Good observations. I would agree with the tone from basswood/X2N combo. The DAX has a more open sound to it in addition to all its power so it would suit those woods better but I would like to try it personally to see if I like it more than in basswood which is the only body wood I've run mine in. That and with rosewood boards.

currently I pulled my X2N out of my RG470FM to make room for the Mustaine LW set and I am already loving that combo. It sounded awesome with the X2N definitely but that pickup will now find its new home in my RG2570 Prestige which has the DAX bridge. Since I don't have a DAX neck pickup I'll bravely be running the DAX bridge in that axe's neck while the X2N is in it's bridge! What do you think of that haha?

Well, the Dominion is around 16K and has a ceramic magnet too.

In my experience, I feel the Dominion is very loosely (but still somewhat) related to the JB/Distortion family, albeit with the obvious touch of DiMarzio. However, the Dominion is more mid-focused than the BW, it's thinner and drier, and it is not as hot.

Side by side, you wouldn't mistake them for one another, but out of the ones I've tried, I think it's the closest.

I have not tried the Evolution in ages, but isn't it hot, tight, and mid-focused yet not as "narrow"-sounding as the Dominion/JB?

But yeah, I agree. There isn't anything in that 16K ballpark with a triple ceramic magnet in the DiMarzio catalog. Even the Dominion which is 16.5K and has a ceramic magnet has the Virtual Vintage thing and the double row of allen poles which really sets it apart.

I'm getting a set of these in a few weeks and based on the description I'm wondering if they'll be reminiscent of the BW...

The Dominion might very well cut it close tone wise but yeah, the DiMarzio touch is there which makes it unique to the BW and vise versa.

Yip, that's my Evo (bridge in particular) alright! I love how that pickup sounds especially with high gain! It screams on the leads as if there's a floored wah in front of the amp. The longer you hold a note the more it screams/sustains. Awesome. On the rhythms its tight and defined too.
