Blackface mod question

I amp thinking about buying a silverface Vibrolux and having it modded. The prices are all over the place, with the "drip edge" transitional models that still have the BF circuit leading the way. What is the NEWEST Silverface that can be modded to Blackface specs relatively easily? I know that they made changes throughout the 70's but what is the cutoff date? thanks, guys:fingersx:

Re: Blackface mod question

if you see a pull boost or anything like that, stay away

Re: Blackface mod question

My 75 Lux has no push/pull or MV. It sounds incredible with the current factory specs, but I will soon have it BF'd! I couldn't be happier with any other amp!!!

Re: Blackface mod question

Normally the ones to stay away from were the master volume ones and ones that had ultralinear transformers...I only own Black Faced stuff so I'm no help to you on the years to get or stay away from?

Re: Blackface mod question

I've had very good luck modding '73 and '74 Silverface amps to blackface specs. In the the case of my '74 Super Reverb, after modding it to blackface specs it sounded better than my '66 blackface Super Reverb so I sold the '66!

Sounds like '73 through '75 would be a good bet and those don't go for an arm and a leg either.

I don't remember if Fender ever put master volume controls on a Vibrolux Reverb or not...but stay away from those if you find one with the master volume.

Re: Blackface mod question

I was told by a tech yesterday that, unlike many other Fenders, they never made an utlralinear or SS rectified Vibrolux, so you can pretty much BF any of them up through 82......just a question of how much you want to spend on the mod and upgrades......better cabinet, speakers, parts, etc. So i;'m still confused.....:chairfall

I really need to send mine to your brother or Jeff Seal!! I just have to find the time!! Christian has really talked Bruce up alot. Sounds like he really knows how to make an amp sing to it's highest potential!!

Re: Blackface mod question

I don't have any post BF Fender amps and so I was just throwing the ultralinear transformer and master volume equations out there from reading stuff from my many tube amp books..
