blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

well im quite possibly the first to do this. i got my neck pos. blackout this morning and put it in the bridge pos. of my LTD laiho V. i had my share of wiring problems, but its in now. ironically, its a bit noisy, but thats cause i did a **** job wiring it up with all the problems i had. the wires wouldnt stick to the back of the pots. i think the sandpaper thing did the trick i guess.

aaaanyhow. my first impressions are that it sounds pretty awesome. its exactly what i was looking for in this guitar. it offsets the brightness quite nicely, but not in an excessive or overwhelming way like the invader. its got a really nice low-mid chunk to it. and the highs are no longer shrill on this guitar. its got very nice definition as well, far from muddy. i definitely hear a lot of the natural sound of the guitar coming through too, the snappiness of the alder/maple/ebony combo. cleans arent bad. im not much of a clean-bridge guy, but they sound pretty good. distort a bit if you play real hard, but you can always roll back the volume. the distortion overall isnt real overpowering, which is nice. sounds maybe just a bit hotter than my JB and DD.

overall this is a very welcome addition to my collection. SD got it right, as always it seems. now ive never used an EMG85 in the bridge, so i cant compare there, but im really happy with this. ill have to see how it sounds through my POD later. also, i should mention it just looks cool. the EMG-ish matte look, on top of a black chrome housing. its classy lookin. SD logo is subtle, but nice to have there.

one word of advice to duncan- maybe make the wires for the battery clip a bit longer, or have an option of extra long ones. i had to put an extension on mine to get it to my output jack, cause its all the way up on the top V fin. id imagine a lot of metal players are gonna be buying these, so anybody with jackson-style Vs are gonna have this problem. or not. i just used some wire from the stock pickup i took out, it was pretty easy.

Which POD do you own? Is it the PODpro rackmount or another model?
Because if it is the PODpro rackmount version, to get rid of that slight distortion on the cleans you should set the front switch to "Line Input" and NOT to "Guitar Input". Plug your guitar to the Line Level input on the back of the POD. I did this as a test to see if it would improve my headroom with the clean channel on my POD and it did wonders. There's no distortion on my clean setting now.

I think you are the first to try the neck Blackout in the bridge. I had a EMG-85 in the bridge of my Carvin BoltPlus because the 81 was too bright on this guitar but the bridge Blackout wasn't overly shrill like the 81 and it sounds
amazing in the bridge of this guitar so I never tried the neck Blackout and just put it in the neck instead. I want the brightest pup in the bridge I can get without the Icepick in the ears effect.

i have a PODxt.

eventually im gonna have to give the bridge model a shot. maybe if i want something new in one of my mahogany-bodied guitars. the neck one is right where it belongs in this guitar though. id actually really like to see how this model sounds in other woods and stuff too.

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

I have discovered that these Blackouts for whatever reason, seem to really bring out the wood tone in my guitars beyond what EMG ever did. My LesPaul now sounds thick, dark, full, awesome etc. but my Carvin BoltPlus with the Alder body sounds bright and clear by comparison with the same pup.

BTW, what do you as a power amp for your PODxt?

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

nothing. i was saying i was just gonna have to see how it sounds through the XT. my main amp is my peavey XXX combo. i just use the XT for recording.

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

i noticed today that the pickup looked a bit low, so i decided to jack it up some.....oh. my. god. it sounds absolutely HUGE now! of course now it sounds even louder and gainier, but it really thickened up the sound a lot. i really like it before, but this is just incredible. it sounds mercilessly heavy.

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

i want one of those ****!ng guitars so bad...that or a jackson. im starting to fall in love with that body style. looks sweet man! now im wondering if i should try a neck in the bridge of some of my guitars. that one in my pic needs some serious low end - BAD!!

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

go for it. i actually expecting a lot more low end until i raised it up. that gave me exactly what i was looking for. amazing what a difference the height makes.

i also love the RR style shape. i was gonna get a jackson RR24 originally, but they took forever to get out (i still havent seen any of the standard models anywhere yet) and i saw this one at a half price sale at the guitar store. **** good deal. i really like it, only problem is its neck-heavy. they fixed the strap button placement on 2007 models though.

also, i did make some clips comparing the stock HZ with the blackout. im still waiting on soundclick to approve my account though. ill post the link when its up.

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

ugh....i hate dialup. it only uploaded the first 14 seconds onto soundclick cause of my ****ty connection. theres 2 minutes total i think. so....nevermind. sorry kids.

ok here we go

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=717394

now, important- the point of this isnt to show how good the blackout sounds, its to show the difference between the two pickups. i didnt change any EQ or other settings for the blackout, its exactly the same as the H4. the only difference is i turned down the volume a bit (its still louder). id need to do some tweaking before i wanted to showcase the blackout's tone. and keep in mind these are quick little messabout things i threw together.

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

Great work. The difference between them is huge! I liked your choice of riffs too.

thanks. i figured it was a nice random mix. priest, kansas, focus, and iced earth :laugh2: mainly i wanted to give examples of high gain, low/mid gain, and clean.

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

Very nice clips! The BO sounds like it has plenty of bass too.

that riff reminds me of Kataklysm, right on \m/

Re: blackout-neck in bridge position.....am i the first?

Now here's something that'd might solve my pickup quest in a mahogony guitar! That is, when the standard 7 sizes come out...!

Bring em on!
