Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

Re: Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

probably like hellfire being shot from a battery of gatling guns.

Re: Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

The best results seem to come from low to medium output pickups. Most of the reviews using high output pickups with the Blackouts preamp have not been all that favorable.

Re: Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

I ran a DD in the bridge for awhile in one of my BOMP guitars. It was a big step in the right direction vs the 1st pickup I tried...a JB. It was very extreme, but usable. Ultimately, I'm happier w/the medium output HB's I have in both now.

Re: Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

I fitted it with a DD this week & think it has made a give difference to the guitar, it's what i've been looking for in this guitar for a long time.

Re: Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

I was just thinking...

Why?
I was just wondering if I should look into it. Then again, how do the livewires compare to the Blackouts and what do Livewires sound like?

You've got to wonder if this is Aceman's protege with a name Aceguy. Both in the very same thread. Unless there is an inside joke I probably missed.

Seems like the high output pups with the preamp are really hit or miss, I've seen good and bad reviews....I was thinking if I went with the preamp of doing the Pearly Gates set or a Demon bridge PG neck....

Re: Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

High output pickups like the Invader and Alternative 8 can get too thick into the BMP. But the Distortion has such a cutting top end that it will stay "alive" sounding on the pick attack.

As a point of reference, the coils inside Original Blackouts, as well as the Coil Packs (which are intended to deliver the Blackouts tone most accurately) are around 8k passive. But most of us still like the Custom, Custom 5, Full Shred, Demon, JB, Dimebucker, Hot Rails (killer!) and Distortion. The Dimarzio Fred/PAF Pro sounded great too. Totally transformed the whiney, wah kind of sound into a bolder, bigger sound with greater fidelity on top and bottom.

The BMP is a lot hotter & has more bass than the Livewire Classics(18 volt) i have but i here a little of a similar crunch but i would guess that the Livewire Metal would kill the Blackout in gain but i've not tried one.

The livewire metal and the blackout metal AHB2 should be pretty close in terms of gain and sound. I want to try a BMP with a DD vs the blackout metal. I have all 3, just need to wire up a test guitar and get a BMP.

Thanks Frank. I was thinking about trying them with the Custom. I love the tone of the Custom, but would love some more umph. I know the pre-amp will color the tone quite a bit but I'm hoping it will retain some of the Custom's character.

Cool, that would interesting to here, i have the Livewire Classic wired up to a 15dB boost & BMP/DD combo still blows it away on gain.

Re: Blackouts Modular Preamp with DD

Has anyone used Blackouts for "other genres"? Meaning, blues, country, jazz, classic rock, etc.
