i love the invader in my jackson rr but i m starting to feel the muddiness of its fat sound.

so i m looking to try some actives~ but need u guys' help!

1. is heavymetal livewire bigger sounding than blackouts?

2. which one has a tighter bottom end?

3. did anyone try the livewire in a rhoades? would the compartment be too small for 2 batteries? this is a major concern....

4. wot about the pots? according to schematics livewires need 100k pots whereas blackouts would be fine with 25k

any livewire users????:arms:

Re: blackouts or heavy metal livewires?

I can't answer all your questions, but I had Invaders in my Jackson RR3. Didn't like them for anything other than riffage, and the neck Invader was just a waste of space for anything other than clean.

I replaced them with Custom/Jazz. Didn't like them much better.

I got Blackouts and they're amazing.

I don't know how Blackouts compare to Livewire Metal pups, but the Blackouts have plenty gain, sound awesome for high gain riffage or leads AND sound better than any pickup I've ever played for cleans. They are seriously good pickups.

For pots, well, Blackouts come with pots, I imagine Livewires do too so it's a moot point. You're going to have to change your original pots no matter which you choose.

Two batteries in the compartment will fit, if you trim all the wires down. But the Blackouts only need one.

Everything that comes in the Blackout kit (two pups, pots, new jack) all fit into my RR3 with no problems, it wasn't any more difficult to do than fitting any other pups, apart from the little extra wiring.

If you want more gain I'd say - why?! Who needs more gain than this? I can't think of a situation where you'd need more gain than the Blackouts offer.
Hell, even Nile use passives (Invaders) and the Blackouts match, or beat, them in gain terms (and every other sense!).

Here's a mock up of how the Blackout's look in my RR3. I haven't got around to taking proper pics yet.

?

I don't understand you. Blackouts look the same as Livewires or EMGs as far as I know. Did you mean you like the look or not?

Re: blackouts or heavy metal livewires?

i dont have any experience with blackouts but i've been using a livewire heavy metal for maybe a year now. its never getting changed

ever

if you want a tight, modern sound. go with blackouts as thats what they are aimed at. The LWHMET is a very interesting beast. its output is ridiculous and it has sooooooooooooooooooooooo much midrange!. so if thats the tone youre into you'll love it. it doesnt scoop, its practically impossible. so if you want a "mainstream" sound you need blackouts. for stuff ranging from iron maiden to stoner prog metal like Mastodon the LW has you covered

Re: blackouts or heavy metal livewires?

sweet i think i ll try the blackouts first and see how it goes. earlier i was saying the blackouts look a bit dull.. well i know emgs and livewires look the same but emg a colored logo at the corner, silver or gold :haha: nothing big deal, it's about the tone!!!

Re: blackouts or heavy metal livewires?

The Blackout Metal will replace the Livewire Metal. They aren't out yet. They will use the same 25K pots, etc. as Blackouts and EMGs and retain the same tonal characteristics and output of the Livewire Metals.

Re: blackouts or heavy metal livewires?

if you want to hear the livewire metal I have a ton of clips on putfile, they're a variety of the axes in my sig, but they're pretty obvious which ones are which once you've listened to a few. The black guitar in the vids is the one with the lwhmet.
