Blackouts verses Black Winters

I have an Ibanez S470 that is equipped with the Blackouts. I just purchased another S470 and will be replacing those pups as well. I am considering putting the Black Winters in the new one rather than the Blackouts. Here is my issue- I absolutely love the sound and tone of the Blackouts but they are a bit too hot. When i'm not playing there is an uncontrollable feedback. Yes I have had everything checked out twice and they are installed correctly and that's the only guitar that does it. So basically my question would be - how "hot" would the Black Winters be compared to the Blackouts?

Re: Blackouts verses Black Winters

Uncontrollable feedback def sounds like something is wrong somewhere, maybe not in the guitar but somewhere in the rig. That said, Blackouts are hot as ****, for sure hotter than the winters would be, although I haven't tried them yet.

Re: Blackouts verses Black Winters

The Black Winters BURY the Blackouts. I've found that actives do feedback a lot. I've had both sets of the pickups you've mentioned I don't have "uncontrollable" feedback with my BW's, but they do feedback. I would say try out the BW's, they are a quality pickup. Like what was said, your gain maybe up very high on the amp, or whatever. A lot of things contribute to feedback, other than hot pickups.

+1

No need for me to even post. The Winters are shear brutality as far as output. And no battery needed

Re: Blackouts verses Black Winters

Thanks , I don't think it is necessarily the rig setup just because I have 2 other guitars I use - a RG with emg's and a Jackson with an X2N . When I switch guitars ( and nothing else) I have no feedback issues.

Re: Blackouts verses Black Winters

Does anyone know if the Black Winters are as tall as the Blackouts? part of my problem may be that I can't lower the pup heighth very much because of the narrow guitar profile

Actually the BW's are probably taller, but not by much.
Lowering the pickup height will not reduce the output of the pickup.

While we're on the subject, are Black Winters 4-wire? The webpage doesn't say.

Re: Blackouts verses Black Winters

what are black winters? I am out of the loop

New pickup designed around the sounds of the Scandinavian death metal scenes. Very bright and very brutal.

The BW are shorter than the Blackouts, which doesn't surprise me because the BW's aren't covered like an active is. As far as sound goes, I prefer the sound of a passive over an active, but those Blackouts do have a nice organic tone. From what I'm seeing, there's something wrong with your wiring somewhere, especially if you aren't having any problems with EMG's. If you do decide to switch to the BW's then you are going to be in for a world of awesome.

Uncontrollable feedback sounds like the pickups are vibrating (resonance) - try dampening them with foam or some surgical tubing it should resolve that issue. The Blackouts are quite a bit hotter than the Black Winter set and a bit brighter as well.

Re: Blackouts verses Black Winters

Ok some things need to be cleared up. IME (I've had both the blackouts and black winters in the same guitar at different times) the Black Winter is brighter. It's also less compressed, and IMO higher output. The blackouts didn't have nearly as much girth or growl.

Also, it was designed for the Scandanavian Black Metal scene. Not Death Metal. However, I haven't yet found a style of metal it couldn't do. It destroys for just about everything I've thrown at it. Heck, even the clean tones are decent.

Re: Blackouts verses Black Winters

I happen to have both as well as invader right here so I recorded some simple demo clips with my phone just so you can get the general idea about how they sound.

The clip levels are not consistent so ignore it.

The black winter and invader are in c on floyds and the blackouts 7 is in a on a hard tail. I had the regular black winter first but I didn't really like it and didn't have enough oomph. (I have 3 guitars with invaders) The trembucker version fixed those issues. I have the invader trembucker in another guitar as well and that seems brighter too. It may be a symptom of the TB spacing but since I have only used the TB version in that guitar I cannot say for sure.

blackouts 7
black winter trembucker
sh-8 invader

if you want compressed, full on gain tones, go black out, if you want responsive vesitile tones, go black winter
