Blackstar HT-20 combo not cutting it ... Now what?

I picked up a Blackstar HT-20 in a trade and I'm not feeling it. Clean is beautiful but distortion is not my cup of tea. Distortion has a REALLY dark character and I can't get it to brighten up for anything (unless I use a Sonic Stomp). I'd rather not use a pedal into the clean because it seems pointless. Where to now? Orange Micro Terror? Marshall DSL15C? What say ye?

Type of music played most? Budget?

Lots of options in 20 watters

Have you tried cranking the ISP all the way to the left?

Sorry,

Heavy rock with tinges of metal. Budget would be about $300 used. Could be more if I sell other stuff.

Jolly, I tried but didn't move my other eq settings. It sounded really scooped. I'll try that on my next run through.

Musicians Friend has the Jet City JCA20HV (vintage) on sale for $299 right now. You would have to pony up for a separate cab though. With a dirt pedal in front you can do Metal, otherwise its Rock n Roll all day

So, I've been tinkering with this amp. I've tried new different preamp tubes, bbe sonic stomp in the loop, things like that. But I was determined to get a good sound out of this thing on its own. It must have been a bad connection on a tube or something cause now its sounding great. I don't think I have it dialed in 100% but I'm getting there.

So sub-question ... What overdrives sound good with this thing?

I put a maxon od9 pro plus in front of my HT1 and it turns into a mini fire breathing dragon. Then if i use it into my 5150 quad box it goes all mental.
