Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

A friend of mine whose tone I really dig uses a Fulldrive 2(MOSFET) but I have no use for the boost option, as it takes up too much real estate and I'm not really in need of more gain. I've got a Timmy clone I plan on using for 'more'

The other day I came across the Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD and it looks to be a very promising pedal, but the price is quite a bit more demanding. That's not too much of a problem, but spending less money is always a good idea.

I'm looking for a pushed, naturally overdriven sound out of my Princeton (and future amps) and I'm curious as to which of these would get me in that territory better.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

I use a FD2 to push my '64 Bandmaster, and it's not going anywhere. I did some recording last week and dialed in one of the favorite tones I've ever pulled out of my rig with the boost side of the Fulldrive. I don't use it often, but it sounded great.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

I use a fulldrive for my Princeton and my twin. Been thru a lot of overdrive pedals over the years. The other pedal that sounds a lot like a fulldrive in mosfet mode is the MXR GTOD if you want something smaller.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

I own both a MOSFET FD2 and a Blackstone and neither of them are going to sound natural.

The FD2 is a hot rodded SD-1 so it sits very proudly int he TS camp of tones and the Blackstone is a sort of a 2 channel Marshall in a box.

Both are GREAT pedals but if you want your Princeton to still sound like your Princeton I'd keep looking however the FM mode on the FD2 might pretty close to what you want.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

I suppose to clarify, I wanted to know how they compare to each other. I'll check out that GT-OD, seems like a pretty interesting overdrive to me. Might sit well with the Timmy.

Also, that's a really interesting comparison to a Marshall for the Blackstone. I've seen it likened to that in a few places and I've got to say that's a little disconcerting. Hopefully it doesn't sit in the same realm as the Box of Rock. Not my deal, for sure.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

The Blackstone and the Box of Rock are worlds apart in ways but they do have a few things in common...

The Blackstone really has to be heard...it's a really unique pedal but the fact is that most folks don't take the time to learn the controls so a lot of guys often flip them w/o giving them a fair shot.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

there's always the fatboost, or the rc and ac boosters from xotic.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

^Fatboost really can be your amp just more... it's very clear.

I have to agree with TGWIF here, if you're looking for a "your amp, just MORE" pedal then I'd suspect neither of these are the ticket. You probably want some sort of clean boost, or just use the Timmy clone you mentioned.

The FD2 is definitely a Tubescreamer derivative, and while I haven't played the Blackstone I've heard it's got a tone of it's own and that it's not "transparent". I doubt these two specific pedals have much in common apart from having two foot-switchable stages.

Re: Blackstone Appliances MOSFET OD vs. Fulldrive 2 MOSFET

I haven't tried the Blackstone, but I have had a few different versions of the Fulldrive. I never got why some people rave about the older versions of the Fulldrive because I thought the Fulldrive Mosfet 2 was best overall. There are some pretty cool tonal variations and it works pretty well as a clean boost. It's a great pedal.

That being said, I could never hang on to a Fulldrive for too long. I always wanted to keep one around, but it would just sit there. I finally stopped buying and selling them. The only constant on my board for years has been the Maxon OD820 and Dimebag Wah. Lately I've been using a Maxon TBO-9. I find the TBO9 to be a great clean boost. It doesn't distort the signal and keeps it pretty true to you amp but it adds a certain warmth and this particular soft "chirp" which reminds me of how Eric Johnson used to sound when he would pick fast (His Marshall era. These days he seems to be all about his fuzzy Dumble tone).

What you might want to consider is a pedal that I've been trying to buy (lost the auction last time) is the Vevet Minotaur. It's a Klon clone. I have played the real Klon and I have also played the JHS clone and a couple of others and the Velvet Minotaur seemed like the best "clone." The other pedals sounded kind of like a "derrivative" instead of a clone.

It will provide you with a great clean boost and it doesn't change your amps natural sound when you drive it. They're not that expensive. If you can catch them on auction then you could possibly get them for under $200.

May i suggest the EP Boost, by Xotic !

Kinda like your amp, just more of it !

. . . and now i want one - thanks Andy !!!
