That seems a little over complicated, at least in contrast to what works for me. I take stiff backed micromesh pads and run the highest grits from 6000 to 12000 along the top of the frets. I don't have to remove the strings necessarily, just loosen then enough to get the pad between the strings and frets, and since they're backed, they glide right over the fret board, no need to mask anything off. The frets come out smooth and lustery, at least along the top half of the frets, which is mostly where it matters.
