Blog: Chords of the Harmonic Minor Scale

Re: Blog: Chords of the Harmonic Minor Scale

I saw this and was going to post something on it. Its exactly the way I want to learn this business, as opposed to the YouTube videos of guys shredding through a practice amp and an iPhone mic.

Re: Blog: Chords of the Harmonic Minor Scale

ANOTHER excellent blog post! Love the 'every other note' approach to chordal arranging and quite frankly would never have thought of that myself. It also deconstructs to find out what scales will work with non-standard chords ... love it!

Back on topic, I was taught that Harmonic Minor only had a raised 7th when ascending the scale; it was played natural when descending. I know many guitar players do not play it this way and don't recall seeing that in your article ... did I miss it? Or am I confusing it with Melodic Minor?

Nevermind, just checked --- it is Melodic Minor I was thinking of. :)

For another little tip, in practice the third chord is usually played as the regular major as opposed to the augmented. That's how I learned it anyway, use your ears to figure which works best for you. Play with your progression to see which fits.
