Blog: Tips from the Recording Studio

Re: Blog: Tips from the Recording Studio

Good basic advice. To which I would add:

Keep a tuner on hand; if you bend and whammy bar during solos, even new strings go south. Check tuning between takes, and especially to match other tracks.

Document as much as you can about all the technical stuff. Amp settings, effects, guitars and tunings, DAW on-board effects, etc.

The "save" button is your friend. When working on a DAW, save to disk after every take, even if it's a flub. Save everything.
Even if you think you don't need to, hit that "save" button.
There's no telling if or when a computer may crash.

A useful piece of advise not usually taken into consideration: appropriate tones. If you're in a post hardcore band with a lot of suspended chords between chugs, the Morbid Angel tone isn't going to cut it. If you're playing classic rock, maybe tone down the Pantera distortion.
