Bluesbucker/VHPAF combo - Comments

I have a PRS copy made by a local luthier, teak wood body, 24 fret maple/rosewood neck,Bolt-in neck joint, and a 25.5" scale. So, naturally, it tends to be a bit bright and snappy sounding.
I got a Dimarzio Bluesbucker(neck) and a VHPAF(bridge) to replace the cheapo Korean high-output buckers currently in it.
Did I make a mistake in choosing this combo? Basically I was going after a SC-HB in between kind of sound which would be versatile and split well.
My musical styles would be Blues, classic, hard and blues rock and maybe the occasional metal song or too.

I've always wanted to try a Bluesbucker in the neck so you'll have to let us know how it works out. That pickup sounds like it should do exactly what you want it to.

How is that teak body? I've been considering a teak guitar neck. I used teak on boats, I know it's water resistant and durable, I was wondering what you thought of it as a guitar tonewood

I do have a rather unusual guitar, the luthier I go to uses seasoned teakwood, and not other 'normal' guitar woods because they arent available in India.Makes for a real heavy guitar BTW.
@jmh....AFAIK, teak necks are used on basses.Maybe you could look it up with some bassists.I havent really played alder or mahogany guitars(You dont get those Fenders and Gibsons easily here in India :() to comment on how teak matches up.Forgive the :newbie:
Maybe I'll post some comments when I have more experience with it.
@ranalli...Will do... the installation and setup will have to wait a bit , I have to get off work and travel to another city to get it done:sad:.I guess some forumites have experience with the Bluesbucker in the neck? so thought I would ask.

I actually spoke to DiMarzio tech support over the phone yesterday. I was thinking about uninstalling the PAF Pro/Fred combo in my guitar in favor of a Bluesbucker combo. What the tech said changed my mind. My Fred gives me a really meaty Tele bridge pickup tone and I love that. He said he didn't think the Bluesbucker bridge pickup would even be close. He also said the Bluesbucker neck pickup sounds like a cross between a P-90 and a Tele neck pickup. While I like Tele neck pickups, that's not the tone I'm after. DiMarzio states, on their website, that they use one coil for tone and the other as a dummy coil just to buck the hum.

I felt that the Bluesbucker would be too bright and lack power in the Bridge slot of my already bright guitar. That is why I chose the VHPAF instead.
For the neck, I am hoping for a good SC tone when split, and a good blues tone generally.Hopefully, rolling the tone control down would get me nearer to that warm, round neck HB sound.Lets see...

Probably a good idea....

I would say its a great idea. I had a VPAF in the bridge and a Unbucker (similar idea like a bluesbucker) in the neck of a all mahogany guitar. Great Combo - warm but with the idea of a single coil clearness. Go for it

Re: Bluesbucker/VHPAF combo - Comments

I have already gone for it:D(those pickups are lying right in front on me)..but the installation is some weeks away, so getting people's opinions in the meantime.

Re: Bluesbucker/VHPAF combo - Comments

I have the same combination but in reverse. Bluesbucker bridge and VPAF neck.

Re: Bluesbucker/VHPAF combo - Comments

Aah, I remember reading that you swapped the VHPAF in your bridge in favor of the Bluesbucker? But I cant possibly put the VHPAF in the neck, too bassy and I hear that under very high gain, it sounds like a neck 'bucker anyway.
Is the bluesbucker more powerful than the VHPAF?I wouldnt want the neck to be too powerful w.r.t the bridge.
This combo should provide good contrast between neck and bridge anyways, right?
