BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

Does anyone have a wiring diagram to coil tap the bridge pickup while using the preamp, I've read some stuff on here about the mod but can't find a diagram or on the main site. Thanks.

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

You mean "coil split" I presume. Have you tried a search of the forum for previous posts?

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

Yeah coil split though it was also referred to on BMP-1 thread as a tap. Yeah i have searched & nothing comes up but i know some people on here have done it.

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

I don't know how myself. If someone doesn't pipe in soon, you might contact customer service, I'm sure they can help you.

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

Just run a toggle that either disconnects the red wire, or switches it to ground. Consider the BMP as receiving the coils in parallel, not series. So you can just lift the red wire and that coil goes away. If you lift the white wire instead, the sound is darker and duller because that coil has loading on its resonant peak.

It may be the other way around but I'm pretty sure. You can try each for free by simply loosening the screw and removing the red, then put it back and listen to removing the white.

I was hoping Frank would step up.

Thanks Frank. I was also curious about that. That makes perfect sense now that I think about it. But, isn't the slug coil (black and white wires) the darker coil? Then lifting the red wire would make the screw coil go away leaving the slug coil active.

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

It doesn't have to do with which coil sounds darker in it's natural state. There's a heavy load on one of the coils, kind of like using an abnormally low value volume pot.

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

Thanks Frank, If i run the red to a toggle i would need to run a wire back to connect to the preamp, yes? Also would the ground go straight to the jack or to one of the grounds on the preamp? Sorry if i being a dummy. :)

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

And what about using a dummy coil in a sss strat? If i like ssl's,or fralins,texas... would them become noiseless?although they will not sound the same,i know. But perhaps they woudn't loss so much tone after all.

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

You can definitely feed a dummy coil into the second coil position. Just toggle between the "real" coil and the dummy coil. Hum cancelling is as much an art as it is science, as you move the guitar around and enter differen fields. So I can't tell you what the best way is to get closest to zero hum with the least change in tone without knowing the entire guitar, the dummy coil, it's location, etc. But as with all hum cancelling, most of the time just getting a "good bit" of cancellation is enough to satisfy most situations.

Re: BMP-1 Coil Tap Mod?

Ok, but what would be the problem if I place the bmp1 in an standard stomp box enclosure with one or several dummy coils? (to pickup different fields)I mean the dummys wired to the secondary coil position in the bmp1.
Yes, i know each guitar, each pickup,etc... is a world in itself, but perhaps the device could be more tweakable with trimpots (or full sized pots),something like the suhr backplate system but outside the guitar.
The only problem could be then the intermediate positions of the volume pot, when the guitar is not injecting hum enough to be bucked with the external device,am I wrong?
Are you sure people at duncan that this device could not be used for something else?
