Bogner Shiva overhauled for 2006

So here is the new Shiva -

FX loop does not need to be buffered
Bright switches for both channels
BOOST is Standard now, and is available on BOTH channels
LEDs on the front for channel and boost

Bogner claims it sounds pretty much the same as the old Shiva with these new features added.

Re: Bogner Shiva overhauled for 2006

What does the bright switch do? I can relate to the boost. The boost in my Shiva does not really add much volume, but it does add a noticeable amount of gain. What I have done with my Shiva to deal with it is I use my tubescreamer with the gain turned all the way down and I have adjusted the volume to use this as a clean boost...... so far I like the way this works. I have not plugged anything into the effects loop yet..... haven't really needed to. I use Chorus, and delay and I have them going straight in and it has not presented any problems. The bright switch is interesting..... Sometimes, with certain guitars the Shiva can be dark............ but I like it.:D

During the past 13 years, the Ecstasy has undergone a lot of small tweaks with the features, so I think the Shiva was due for some changes.

It boggles my mind when some companies don't make minor tweaks over the life of the product, because obviously players make constructive comments.

Yep, as of '06 all of Bogner's gear went up in price. I found this out the hard way when I wanted to custom order an OS 2X12'' cabinet in red tolex, they wanted ~$1100  I said "screw it" and bought a used 4x12" for $900 instead.

I'm glad to see a new version of this amp out. If the list price is around $2200, I'll definitely be getting it. I found a workaround for just about every "issue" they've fixed, but I'd like to see how much of a difference a few new tweaks makes especially when the older version sounds as good as it does.

Sorry Olin, I thought I had sent you the reply before :smack:

Before we begin, study these two diagrams (taken from the Bogner website):

To get the perfect FX Loop cable, ignore the 100k resistor you see pictured in between the center conductor of the cable and the positive or tip end of the plug. You don't want a 100k in there because it will sound dull, you want a 47k resistor in there (trust me, it sounds MUCH BETTER and it will NOT harm your amp in any way, shape or form).

You want footswitchable pure volume to cut through with leads because the boost doesn't give you enough? I use this: http://goudiefx.com/boost.php This solves the volume issue with cutting through with leads. This is a perfect way around having to mod your amp for a boost master volume. Want to thicken up your leads or make them sustain longer? Use a transparent overdrive pedal and dial in a little mids and gain and you'll be pleasantly surprised (I use a Pro Analog Dual Drive, I'll be trying the Pro Analog Power Driver in a few weeks).

Ok, now that leads are taken care of, how about speakers? I recommend a mix of Vintage 30s and Classic Lead 80s. Vintage 30s have a nice upper mid push that helps cut through the mix, but doesn't hold together in the lowend too well and can sound a bit muddy due to a smooth highend. Classic Lead 80s are extremely balanced and stays together in the lowend and has that upper note extension, so the two speakers mix well together. I really dig the crunch that the CL80s give too (it adds an edge to the Shiva which has always been more of a smoother, more refined and modded Marshall 800)! This gave me more headroom in the cleans and better definition at higher volumes, which was exactly what I was looking for (I usually crank my clean channel volume around 1 o'clock with my master around 11 o'clock... so definitely not "soft" volumes).

There are a number of things to pay attention to when setting up the cables. #1 make sure the modded end of the FX Ducking cable goes into the input of the first pedal in the loop, if it's reversed, it will sound way too hot and terrible (found that out the hard way). #2 make sure the ground on the cable doesn't touch anything on the modded end side, it will ruin the results. #3 use heat shrink tubing or electrical tape to isolate components
