Boost pedal

I've got a question for all you boost fanatics... I don't know if there's exactly what I'm looking for, but does anyone know a pedal that can boost your gain but keep your tone intact? Like without sucking out any bass/treble etc, providing lots of sustain?

thanks

Re: Boost pedal

The Barber Launch Pad gives up to 25db of clean boost with no change in tone at all. And, it's built like a tank and priced right, www.barberelectronics.com. There is also the SD booster pedal, it's supposed to be really good as well.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Boost pedal

The Bad Bob Booster from RGW Electronics will do the trick, too, as will a number of others based on Jack Orman's JFET design. I think some of these (e.g., the Bad Bob) also yield a slight boost in presence that is very toneful.

Re: Boost pedal

I use a SD pickup booster to provide more grind, volume. The SD pedal has from 6 to 25 dB of gain. It leaves your tone intact it just adds umph. Mine is an earlier one that has radio station issues (the new ones are grounded different) but I'm trying to get mine grounded. For 75 bucks it's a steal!

Re: Boost pedal

hm.. I didn't know the SD booster had a gain boost, I thought it was just for fattening up pickups! I'll have to check it out

Re: Boost pedal

If u have the bucks, the Zvex Super Duper is just badass! It's essentially 2 boosts in one. They can work independant of each other, or together. It may boost the treble just a hair is anything. Very useful pedal.

Edit: Here's a pick of my limited edition, pink sparklie Super Duper. http://brandonarzillo.com/fender.htm

Re: Boost pedal

Metalman, do a search for BOOST PEDALs or OD AS BOOST.
This subject has been discussed ad infinitum.

Re: Boost pedal

I love my Duncan Booster, don't care for the resonance boosts but the clean boost does not change tone at all, great deal.

Re: Boost pedal

Fulltone Fatboost! I couldn't believe what a kick in the pants it gave my friends Plexi... moved it into Eric Johnson territory.

Re: Boost pedal

One question about the SD pickup booster... maybe this is a stupid question but I don't know anything about the 6-25db of gain and what not. Will this pedal push a clean amp into mild overdrive?

Some boosts can be used in that way -- by increasing the output of the guitar, you will clip the input of the preamp stage to your amp. It's kind of like simulating your pickup as a distortion pickup ...
However, this will not sound very good; you're better off clipping the preamp by turning your gain up; or using a dedicated OD pedal.

Re: Boost pedal

you mean that the pickup booster doesn't turn your gain up enough to push the amp into distortion?

Re: Boost pedal

The Seymour duncan is desinged to give u a clean boost in ur signal with no tone colouration. Another One is the Voodoolabs Sparkle Drive which has tone, boost and gain controls. The boost will give u a clean boost in ur signal and the gain will obviously add more preamp type gain to the signal and im told the gain boost is very tube screamer like.

Re: Boost pedal

The SD pedal booster is the best one that I've seen for awhile. Morley made several pedals that boosted the input as well a long time ago.

Re: Boost pedal

I use the Fulltone Fat Boost, too --> the cleaner the channel to start with, the more boost it will give you.
A good one (like the FB) will not colour the sound in any way.
It is not the same as adding another gain stage, tho, as when you use an OD or distortion pedal. Hope that makes sense to you!

Your best bet is to go somewhere that has both pedals and set a head with the gain 1/2 way up and try using a boost and a OD to determine which is better for you.

Re: Boost pedal

if you have an amp set clean and increase the level of the input signal, the amp will get louder until it starts to break up. if your amp has a high headroom preamp section youll just get more volume. if not then youll introduce grind and sustain into the sound.
lately ive been setting my bassman so with the guitar up full, i get just a hint of clipping then use the sd booster pedal to push the amp into overdrive
