Bored of your setup even though it sounds awesome.

So, this is going to be kind of strange to ask but I figured I'd do it for ****s and giggles. I'm playing my jap strat into a mesa mkII with a delay in the loop. I have been doing open mics and other stuff lately and have even gotten compliments on my sound. I'm completely happy with my tone and all that but I feel bored lol. Nothing in my setup has been changed in a year. What can I do to have a bit more fun with my rig? I've thought about adding guitars but they will just sit as the other ones have. Pedals are meh too.

And don't just say play. My playing/songwriting is at a much higher level than it has ever been (and I'm working on that continuously more than anything else). :D

EDIT: I changed the speaker in the mesa 3 or 4 months ago but that has been the only major change. :P

I'm the same way... always looking for the next best thing even if I LOVE my current guitar/amp/pedals.

My brother and bandmate is the opposite he has had the same gear for years. Goes to show everyone is different right ?

Right now I'm rockin a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio into an Ampeg GVT15H or Fender M-80 head into a Traynor vertical slant 2x12 v30 cab and a peavey 1x15 scorpion ported cab and it sounds absolutely killer with my Bass Big Muff PI and Whammy V octaver. Sounds like a bassist is following me on every note with that 15". I have actually never been happier and am not looking for any new pedals or amps but I like to experiment and still rent different Guitars just to keep it exciting...

Don't change your "working" rig, but try some different stuff just for yourself.

Pick up a cheap Valvestate head and try to find a cheap comfortable to play LP or PRS style guitar with high output humbuckers just for fun.

Re: Bored of your setup even though it sounds awesome.

either

1) start building a new rig

or

2) start playing different stuff with your existing rig and see how far you can push it beyond its comfort zone (and if it doesn't fare well, see point 1)

I say put the guitar down and go do something else for a few days, maybe even a few weeks. Find another hobby for a brief period of time, then come back to the guitar rig.

well, once you change music genres this little happy place you found will be DESTROYED!!! then the gas seeps in muwhahaha

Re: Bored of your setup even though it sounds awesome.

also, other instruments, recording gear, practice space, nice van, it never stops

Re: Bored of your setup even though it sounds awesome.

Why mess with what works? I've been playing a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for months, and haven't really even touched the Plexi I built, or even my Sovtek stack. It just works, so I just play it.

Re: Bored of your setup even though it sounds awesome.

Get a second rig, but make it a crap rig on purpose so you can constantly change that rig up to try and improve it. You need something that you're going to have to FIGHT with just to make it sound good.

Re: Bored of your setup even though it sounds awesome.

I second the idea of two rigs....I'm in the process of doing this myself....I'm going to a big boy rig and than a little boy rig....

Re: Bored of your setup even though it sounds awesome.

Leave it be, and change your outlook instead. It's all about serving the song, not about preventing "boredom." If you are doing that with what you have, just leave well enough alone.

It's not the gear, it's you. You need to discover the correct cocktail of mind-altering substances.
