I'm thinking about getting a chorus pedal to add yo my list of weapons...
Boss offers 2 chorus pedals. Can someone explain what the major difference between the 2 are? Any opinions on which is better and why would be appreciated too.
I'd go for the little mono CE-2 chorus in the blue box. IMO (and also in David Gilmore's opinion!) it has the most pleasing tone. I also have a CE-3 Stereo version of that chorus...the tone is not nearly as nice as the CE-2. Lew
C'mon guys, he's asking about the CH-1 and the CE-5 not the CE-2 There are a few CE-2's being sold on ebay and the prices are going higher and higher ( i personally own 3 CE-2's myself ).
Both the CH-1 and the CE-5 are good Chorus pedals for the money. These pedals really shine when used on Stereo modes. The sound of the CH-1 is not as lush as the CE-5 in my opinion and the EQ knob doesn't really work that well. Turning the knob doesn't give you an audible difference from low to high settings. The CH-1 is the type of Chorus pedal that either you'll love it or hate it. Joe Satriani seems to love his CH-1 and it's still on his pedalboard.
The CE-5 is a bit better sounding than the CH-1. It's got the lush and shimmer that the CH-1 is lacking and the Filter controls actually work so you can shape the type of chorusing effect you want. Note that both pedals have a Level control so you can set how loud the chorus effect you want in your sound. Steve Vai used/uses a CE-5.
The CE-2 sound wise compared to the CH-1 and CE-5 is way better. That's because it uses a great sounding BBD chip in the delay circuit ( MN3002 ). Very lush and warm sounding. Analog chorusing at its best. If you have the money and don't need a stereo feature on your chorus, then i recommend the CE-2 if you're after a great sounding analog chorus. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the Japanese made and the Taiwanese made CE-2's as all three of my CE-2's were made in Japan. Boss shifted their production in Taiwan in late '86 so after this period, all Boss pedals are made in Taiwan. Here's one of my CE-2 that i bought back in 1982. Still MINT in the box.
That's right! :laugh2: Well, he's asking what's the difference between the two pedals that he mentioned and you didn't help on that one. You just recommended a different pedal straight. What i did was describe my experience and the differences between the CH-1 and CE-5 and gave my personal opinion. I also tried to explain the reason why the majority are recommending the CE-2 and why it's supposedly better. Now he can decide. He might pass on a pedal that will actually work for him if people keep making a different suggestion without even explaining the difference. Yes, personally i voted for the CE-2 based on my own preference because i think it sounds better than the pedal that he originally mentioned. If i was asking what's the difference between a Marshall and a Fender you think i would be happy to hear someone suggesting: "Forget those amps, just get a Mesa-Boogie, it's cooler". Did it answer my question and helped? Nope.
